Can anyone compare the possible appropriateness of these programs? Would the PL bore an 11 yo or give us a good , successful base? I do not have any experience with Latin so I am planning on learning alongside Brigid. Thought the DVD would be helpful.
If you use one of these programs, what does your learning schedule look like?

Hi Viv,
We used LC with my 11 yo. It took us a year and a half to complete level I. Like you I don't have any experience with Latin. I do know Spanish though and that help me help her for a while until we got to the declensions. She just wouldn't get it. So we decided to wait until the DVDs came out. So this year we completed the rest of level I. She didn't do Latin every day but alternated it with Spanish. I didn't have her chant vocabulary words or use flash cards. My goal was some understanding and exposure. We are doing LC II next year and I think I will probably follow the same schedule and have the same goals. I figure that if she really likes it she can pursue further in high school.

I thought it was Prima Latina and Latina Christiana but I just noticed that it said CL so maybe I don't know what it is after all.

Thanks for enlightening me!

As for Latin programs for 11year olds, I don't have any experience with either of these programs, but one of my friends began using LC/CL (Latina Christiana) last year for her 11yo dd and this year began her 10yodd with it. They are very pleased with it and find it user friendly to a non-Latin-oriented Mom.

If you're looking for something a little more on the "lite" side, we liked "Our Roman Roots" for the younger set. It is a slow intro to Latin, only a little grammar, and lots of memorization of sayings, prayers and songs (the first two songs we learned were "Twinkle" in Latin, and "Tantum Ergo"!) There were a few errors in the text book, which was irksome, but on the whole it's an easy way to introduce Latin, especially if you have students who are grammar-resistant. I plan to start my grammar-hating 10yods on this in the Fall. Since we have the privilege of being able to attend a beautiful Tridentine Mass here during the school year, knowing the prayers of the Church should really help "ring a bell" for the kiddlets.

Hi Viv,

We've used LC I and follow it according to the MODG plan. My ds got through it once in 4th grade & for the 2nd time in 5th grade. I absolutely love how Laura Berquist has them repeat it like that. We have a 4-day school week and easily get through a chapter per week. The 1st year is pretty much memorization - prayers, chants and vocabulary. The 2nd year is more the mechanics and the student actually follows and fills in the answers in the workbook. Of course, you can do it in just 1 year without the review. We're planning on using LC II in the same way - the 2 year plan.

I have not seen Prima Latina but am considering it for my younger ones. LC I was quite do-able for a 9-year-old so I would recommend you start with that.

Recently I borrowed the dvds from a friend and am planning to purchase them. I found that the dvds really filled in the gaps that I often miss and it provides great reinforcement.
