I just thought I'd mention I put up pictures on my blog of a field trip we took yesterday to a medieval castle! We visited Hammond Castle in Gloucester MA, built in 1926 by inventor (and millionaire, obviously) John Hammond as a wedding gift to his wife!
The castle is absolutely gorgeous and the kids enjoyed the Life in Medieval Society program. Details are kind of mixed in with my Michaelmas post.
I haven't added notes to the photo album yet, but will soon!

What fun!
In MO there is an old derelict castle with the crazy name of Ha Ha Tonka that a rich guy built too and it promptly burned. It is most impressive on Halloween when there are hundreds of Jack-o-lanterns scattered about and you walk up a long wooded trail to the castle wearing a cape (must have a costume with a cape to blow in the wind if it is warm or, alternatively, to keep you warm if it is cold ) It is a great family time with historical or nature scary stories around campfires and hot apple cider and smores...
Does your castle have seasonal family fun stuff planned?

Well, sort of. In a few weeks the proprietors are turning the castle into a "Castle of the D*mned" (horrible, horrible name) for people ages 13+. It sounds like one of those crazy haunted house experiences which I would not go anywhere near though I am way over 13!
I love the sound of the activity you described, Jennifer, with all the pumpkins and such! It's too bad Hammond doesn't do something less greusome because it is really a lovely setting and could be a terrific Halloween/late autumn experience! It's right on the ocean and the gardens are gorgeous!
They also told us next July they'll be having a King Arthur Faire and *that* sounds wonderful!!

That's AWFUL, Dawn.
I just hate the horrifying aspects of Halloween, it can be such a fun Fall time but is too often skewed. I'm with you, never been to a 13+ haunted house and don't plan on going to one!

Dawn,
My husband and I stumbled on the Hammond castle during a trip to Boston last year - your post brought back memories! We were wishing we had the kids with us, especially for all the armor, weapons, etc.
