I am trying to tie all our subjects to a chronological history beginning with the Bible. I am using Christ the King Lord of History as a guide/timeline.
My question is what stories/literature are available for the early centuries BC. Are there any other than mythology?
The Bible History we are using has some, and of course the Bible itself, but are there any historical or historical fiction books before Joseph that you can think of?
I was looking at Adam and His Kin by Ruth Beechick but I saw a post in this forum saying it should be avoided. Does anyone know what is "wrong" with the book? They don't have it at our library so I can preview it.
We are going to watch a few DVD's (Ten Commandments, etc.) but I am really looking for books they can read together, do narration, etc.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Blessings,
Krisann

There are quite a few Bethlehem books and some suggestions from RC history. A lot depends on the ages of the children. We are doing ancient history with all of ours - and different dc will be reading different things following rc-history - some modifications. I am in the process of reading books to determine appropriateness for my dc. So far I'm not sure how much beyond the Bible and a few of the Bethlehem books, I'll read with my younger ones. Only my highschooler will read Mara, Daughter of the Nile.
Let me know if you have any great finds.
I have not yet previewed everything on my shelves.

Krisann,
What time period are you looking at first? Where is your first cut off.
I was thinking of Bethlehem's God King but that is 700Bc set in Eygpt. Then there are Mary Renault's books set in the Persian war timeframe.
Are these too late to start with?

The kids who will be schooling this year are 14, 13, and 12. The 13 is a slow reader but the other two are very advanced.
We will all be working together in most subjects and I want to try as much as possible to tie everything together.
I want to start with the earliest possible dates and work our way forward. I realize that there will not be a whole lot of info for many area/times but if we can at least touch on them I think that would be good. We can spend more time on areas that provide more information.
Christ the King, Lord of History really starts with Abraham and Moses. It barely touches anything else before that. I will be using the Bible and Bible history but I was hoping that there were some other books, like historical fiction or something.
My teens tend to grumble about reading the "Bible" because it is worded so differently from how we speak. It is "boring" and hard to understand.
The link that Meredith provided has given me some good ideas and a place to start, but if anyone else has some good ideas please jump in.
Blessings,
Krisann

All Through the Ages lists a few additional titles that are probably all OOP (I can't vouch for them as far as orthodoxy). Some of these are fall in the time period after Joseph but look good as far as historical fiction if your teens want to go beyond the Bible:
Life in the Great Ice Age by Michael and Beverly Oard
Genesis Flood by John Whitcomb and Henry Morris
House for My Name by Peter Leithart--an Old Testament survey that weaves Scripture into narrative history
Usborne--Early Civilizations and Ancient Worlds
Pilgrimage of Ben Beriah by Charlotte Yonge--Exodus, wanderings and death of Moses
Science in Ancient Mesopotamia by CarolMoss
Warrior Scarlet by Rosemary Sutcliff--Bronze Age Britian
Greatest Book Ever Written by Fulton Oursler--novelized OT scriptures
These come from Historical Fiction by Hannah Logasa (1960)(You may not be able to find many of these :
Little Magic Painter by Muriel Fellows--Stone age story
Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow Allen French--primitive Ice Age
Senac the Lion Man by George Langford--The Stone Age in France
Before Homer T.R. Williamson--primitive Cretan sea-rovers
Here's Cathy Duffy's review of Adam and His Kin

What about a Great Adventure as a starter for Salvation history and then read some of the Bethlehem books related to the time period. God King (Hezekiah), Hittite Warrior (Deborah) and another one about Nehemiah.

OOps, sorry - just noticed that you said before Joseph. I'm not sure I know of any historical fiction there although a few I have are right after that time and mention Joseph. I guess the only one that fits your time period request would be The Great Adventures by Jeff Cavin and that is a video presentation with a timeline not historical fiction.
