Aye lads and lasses,
We're reading Little House in the Highlandsnow and we were wonderin' if ye have any recommendations for other activities or livin' books about the country.
Thank ye.
We did do Alice's version of Cook, however, and even in the heat did porridge in the bedroom!

Try Mollie Hunter - A Stranger Came A Shore. It's a trully mesmorising piece of literature pertaining to the legend of teh Kelpie. She wrote some other stunning novels I believe. There are also you less well know Hill of the Red Fox - Alex Campbell McLean. I was educated in the Scottish islands and we studies both of these in late primary early Secondary - 10 to 12 years of age.

Some Scottish historical fiction ...
Bonnie Dundee by Rosemary Sutcliff - story of a hero of the Jacobite rebellion. An American expat friend read through stacks of British history books with her family while they were here and reviewed them for me. She said they loved this one.
The Ghosts of Glencoe by Molly Hunter - I borrowed this from the library to review but the print was too small for my eyes so I never got very far . Tells the story of the Battle of Glencoe and the massacre of the Highlanders during the Jacobite rebellion.
My friend also found another book by Rosemary Sutcliff set in Scotland. This is what she said about it: When we went to Scotland last autumn, we read Sutcliff's We Lived in Drumfyvie, which was a great read and I recommend here. It is set in an imaginary village of Drumfyvie. Each chapter is a separate story about people and an event in the village set in different time periods, like Covenanters who sign in blood and a Wise Woman who is tried by ordeal as a witch (dies instantly from the plunge into cold water, so not especially frightful).
I suspect all three books are out of print, so I don't know how easy they would be to find.
Oh, there is also a book by G.A.Henty, if he is to your taste: Bonnie Prince Charlie - a tale of Fontenoy and Culloden.

Just quickly some off my shelves, another couple from Mollie Hunter are 'Hi Johnny' and 'The Lothian Run'.
Iona McGregor has written An Edinbugh Reel and may have written others.
DK Broster has "the Dark Mile' and it is part of a series. It follows The Flight of the Heron and The Gleam in the North.
I don't know which are in print.

It's kindof silly, but fun...and my kids loved it, but the movie "Brigadoon" is set in the Scottish Highlands.

H.E. Marshall (author of An Island Story and This Country of Ours) also wrote Scotland's Story. It's at www.yesterdaysclassics.com -- and on my wish list.
