Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I bought Learning Spanish with Grace a year ago and we've not even opened it. I was thinking about doing Prima Latina this year (dd 8, ds 6), but now I'm wondering if I should just stick to starting Spanish first. We do live in Texas and Spanish is heard, used often. However, I believe there are great benefits to Latin. Any suggestions?

Which are you most able to follow through with? Do you have any background in either language, no matter how minimal? We have both Prima Latina and Teaching Spanish with Grace - and neither has been used because I haven't had the time or confidence to help the children.

If I had access to a Latin Mass, perhaps we'd have had more motivation. If we had an opportunity to speak a lot of Spanish, that might have helped. My dd finally took Spanish in high school because she wants a living language and there was a tutor available. My 2nd dd will be starting Latin because we have a co-op teacher for it. Better to do something than nothing I suppose. We've settled on just learning Latin prayers for Latin at the moment and maybe build from there. I guess what I'm saying is that I'd make the evaluation based on which is most likely to get beyond looking at the first two pages and thinking you ought to do it. I think any language is a benefit and the one that you have resources to do and the support for, is the one that makes the most sense to start with unless someone in the house has a passion for a particular language.

Thanks, Janet. We have no Latin masses anywhere near us. However, we could go to several Spanish masses! My practical side is telling me to stick with Spanish b/c I've already paid for it and my dh minored in it in college. I took two years of it in college, but it's as if I took none.

You could do like we are doing. We are going to do Spanish as our foreign language, but will be studying Latin as a root-word study (using English from the Roots Up and Words on the Vine). I think they will comlement each other well that way because we can use the latin root words to think of both English AND Spanish derivatives! Then if ds decides he really likes Latin, he can do a more formal study of it if he wants.
Our parish has just started a monthly Latin Mass and ds has expressed and interest in attending (and serving) so I think we may get Lingua Angelica to help us learn some of the songs.
