Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK you guys. Research continues on this end for the Ever Transmogrifying Road Trip. Any suggestions on wonderful colonial sites/American Rev sites or American Indian sites/activities in the above-mentioned states???

Forgive me for all this brain-picking, but you all are too good a resource to bypass!

Thanks, Kelly in FL-

Kelly,
in Eagle WI.TOld World Wisconsin

Its a lot like Williamsburg VA, but it centers around 1800's Wi farm life. Check out the website. If you are driving from Chicago towards Milwaukee its not much of a detour. Its about an hour from us and we're on the WI border.

Hi Kelly,
I have a few ideas for you, just off the top of my head. I will list them here, and get back to you if I come up with anything else.

In Monroe (off I-75, close to the bottom of the Mitten)was The Battle of the Raisin River. It was fought during the Battle of 1812. Here is the info on the visitor center. Monroe has battle re-enactments at various times during the year.

In Dearborn (close to Detroit) is the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. There isn't much here as far as Revolutionary stuff, or Native American, but it does have the history of the auto, and other "old-fashioned" stuff. The boys enjoy the glass-blowing the most, in the Village.

Here is a site for information on Native American places to visit. On the list shown, is the Natural History Museum at the University of Michigan. We go there often (a free place to visit and check out dinosaurs and such.) It shows a lot of the wildlife native to MI, and has dioramas of Native Americans, from all over the country. Personally, from what I have seen on this site and associated blogs, your children could probably do a better job at these! A warning: some of the NA women do not have tops.

In Detroit, also not historical or NA, but very neat, is the resting place for Father Solanus Casey. We have gone there and left prayers. The boys have really enjoyed it. Here are directions and here is a link from the center with suggested children's activities.

Heading north (or south if you come through Wisconsin to the UP and then down) is Fort Mackinac, which was built by the British during the Revolutionary War. BTW, my 15yo ds will be working there the last week of July (Boy Scout service camp.)

Once over the Mackinac Bridge, you can go to the Jampot and buy some jam made by the Byzantine monks who live there.

You can also visit the Father Marquette Memorial Center, and learn more about Father Marquette. You can get this book about him, also.

If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me. I joke that I have lived in a 20 mile radius my whole life. At least I have been able to travel!    Aside from the economy, I really like MI!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Ooh, lots of good suggestions. Thanks.

We have plans to be at Mackinaw Island, but not until the 2nd of August, so we'll miss your ds, Stacy. Fort Michimilimack (did I spell it right????) looks very interesting, too.

I'll be going thru all those links with a fine-tooth comb. Thanks!
