Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My older daughter just finished reading about the Cold War, more specifically about the Berlin Wall coming down. This sparked lots of interest in my elementary age children. Are there lesson plans and or books you would recommend for a unit study on the Cold War/Berlin Wall?

There is a picture book, The Wall, by Peter Sis that is quite good- even though it is a picture books older kids up through high school will still get a lot out of it. It is not about the Berlin Wall but about growing up under Communism.

Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift's "Chocolate Pilot" by Michael Tunnell (juvenile non-fiction)
Christmas from Heaven: The True Story fo the Berlin Candy Bomber by Tom Brokaw (juvenile non-fiction)
Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot by Margot Theis Raven (picture book)

The Night of the Wall by Priscilla Goldsthwait (chapter book) It tells story of Berlin Wall going up and a boy being separated from his mother.

I Am David (also published first as North to Freedom 1965) by Anne Holms and made into a movie (2004) with Jim Caveziel. It tells the story of a 12 year old boy in a Bulgarian labor camp circa 1953 who escapes.

Dr. Suess' book The Butter Battle Book was his allegory/parable about the arms race and the Cold War.

Also found this - depicts some famous or dramatic escapes over the wall through the years. Told in a National Geographic documentary with David Hasselhoff (which is kind of funny) for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall.

Hasselhoff vs. the Berlin Wall

And another documentary from the History Channel on the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall. Well done overview.
