Is there something out there that would give my junior high and high school students an overview of history, maybe a crash course of some kind? We've done in-depth studies of certain time periods, but I think doing something like this over the summer would be good for us, especially my rising freshman.

We've done some Teaching Company (I think that's it) history dvds in the past but these would be over her head.

Something fun? Easy? Could be done in 30 or 45 minute increments?

Learning the Classically Catholic Memory timeline has really helped my now 7th-grader be able to place events in history and understand the chronology of history. CCM has YouTube videos that go with the timeline cards that make them easier to memorize (my 13YO was able to memorize it last year, and my 9YO, with lots of effort, did it this year).

Notgrass is publishing "From Abraham to You" this year... it is an overview of world history. It's only available digitally right now, but you can go to the site and view a sample chapter, which will give you a good idea of how it is set up.

It is for middle school, but I think anyone could read and learn from it.
We used their history program this year, and we all found it enjoyable: easy to read, interesting, and all set up and ready to go for you.

And there's the simple option, pick your favorite comprehensive history book to read and discuss.

I like Gombrich's A Little History of the World particularly the last chapter which discusses how life changed during his lifespan (and not to believe everything you read in newspapers!).

We've listened to Gombrich's Little History on more than one long distance road trip. Very good.

Another option might be The World's Story by Elizabeth O'Neil, recently republished by Hillside. Mater Amabilis uses it now instead of The Story of Mankind for Level 3 history (6th and 7th grade).

And of course, The Story of Mankind by van Loon is a classic that people either love or hate, from what I can gather.

Another good overview is Hillyer's A Child's History of the World. Not a Catholic perspective, but from a general Christian point of view. Easy to read (about 5th grade level) and covers key events and people.

Be aware it is particularly centered on English history (so while it covers European/American history well, there is not as much information about other countries, although I think all the major world religions are discussed) and also that it discusses the beginning of the world in evolutionary terms, if either of those is a concern for you. The copy I have only goes to about 1900, but I think the one I linked has been updated and includes at least WWI and maybe WWII. Check the TOC.
