We just read the D'Aulaire's biography of George Washington. I have a couple of picture books about the Revolutionary War that we also read (mostly about the Boston Tea Party and the beginning of the war). My 2nd grade son is begging me to read him something about the actual fighting. He wants to hear about the cannons and guns and battles. Can anyone recommend a good book or books. It would be nice to have some kind of a spine to read from in Morning Basket as well as some picture books. I am planning on starting to read TCOO as soon as we finish this overview of US History, but I am wondering if I should just skip to the part in that series about the Revolutionary War. I'd appreciate your thoughts and ideas. Thanks!

Well...I always say "go with the interest." Students are so much more engaged and really learn if they are having a particular interest in pursuing a topic. I don't stick to strictly chronological history - for that reason.
So, would you be looking for other picture or chapter books that cover cannons/guns & battles or non-fiction information type of books on those topics?
The chronological history picture book thread has a pretty big section on the Revolutionary War. There are battle books listed there. One I highly recommend is Dennis Fradin's Let it Begin Here. He also has books on a couple other specific battles (Yorktown, Boston Massacre) that are part of some battle series.
There are lots of non-fiction series that focus on guns and ammunition of various wars. If you get the revolutionary war edition of any of those it would have lots of those details. I will check back in my files to see if there are particular series I highlighted. And as mentioned there are a variety of battle series that cover different wars. There are also books that compare the guns/ammo between different wars. That is an interesting approach as well.

I read a couple of biographies of Francis Marion (who, I think, loosely inspired the movie "The Patriot") when I was a child, and I really enjoyed them. Don't remember titles, it was just whatever was in the school library, but might give you a starting place.

Actually, we are going to homeschool week in Williamsburg next week. They are having reenactments at Jamestown in a little over a week. I am very excited!

Mary, he would love a nonfiction book about weapons. He is very interested in these things right now and I honestly don't even know where to start!

"The Swamp Fox" is a good biography of Francis Marion. It is fascinating and has great pictures, but it is a little long. You might either read through it slowly over several days, or you could skim the highlights.
King George and Broadswords: The Battle at Widow Moore's Creek is a book with great pictures.
The pictures are mainly photos from the yearly reenactment at Moore's Creek. Lots of weapons are shown- even one of the cannons, which was named "Mother Covington". Mother Covington's daughter, a rotating gun, is also shown, but I can't remember its name.
The text is very wordy, but I am certain your ds would love the pictures!

You will love the homeschool week experience. Plan for cold weather - be pleasantly surprised if it's warm! (Yes, voice of experience!)
If you get back to VA any time soon, Mount Vernon's visitor center has a great 4-D experience about George Washington's life that would thrill your son. I drag everyone who visits us to Mount Vernon...you really understand George much better when you visit his beloved home.

I have never been to Mount Vernon. We will definitely go next time we are up near DC! We went to homeschool week last year and it was definitely cold!

Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox
By Kate Salley Palmer
I see that she has a fairly new book out now on black soldiers in the Revolutionary War called "Nearly Invisible"- I have to look into that.
She is one of my favorite authors/illustrators!
ETA: Francis Marion was an AMAZING man. He is one of my favorite Revolutionary War heroes.

How to be a Revolutionary War Soldier by Thomas Ratliff is fun book for pretending to be a soldier recruit. Walks you through the life of the soldier (pay, uniform, weapons, rations, etc.). I think very appealing to to a 8 yo boy with interest in "soldiering". I really like the illustrations.
I just added Revolutionary Friends about George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette to the chronological history list since I had forgotten that one. It is a new one from last year. Very interesting story.

Speaking of the Swamp Fox, Francis Marion, an all round crowd-pleaser is the old Disney Swamp Fox series with Leslie Nielsen. While the series as a whole is hard to obtain &scarce as hens teeth, you CAN find 6 episodes on YouTube. Not necessarily historically accurate, but certainly historically based, and will give your kids a good sense of who the Swamp Fox was and what he did!
Ironically, I was just talking with a friend about a lecture series I recently listened to on famous people from history-one of the biographies was Francis Marion. My friend scoffed and wondered WHY in the world anyone would waste their time on a historical figure from 200+ years ago that has "absolutely no bearing on lives today". I queried my friend as to which county they pay their car registration... When I heard the answer was Marion County, I have to confess I enjoyed asking, pointedly, "why MARION county-do u know who that's named for?" Apparently Francis Marion was so well-regarded that there are over 29 cities in the US named after him and 17 counties! Who says history doesn't affect us today?

Kelly, so happy to see you here again!
We loved that series, and it really did inspire my brothers and sons. The song is great, too,
The Landmark Swamp Fox of the Revoltion is also well-read here...fleshes out the series for the boys.

I have Rush Limbaugh's books waiting for me to read through. At first glance a bit narcissistic, but interesting.

I wouldn't expect any different given the source.
We just received the Pilgrim book as a gift, and the boys started reading it together (ds9 reading aloud) and really seem to enjoy it.
I stopped listening to the radio show years ago, but I have to admit he is an entertaining persona, the narcissism almost contributing to that, and it is no surprise to me that my boys find it amusing.
