Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A few months ago I had a chance to visit the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven, Germany. Before you think, so what, go and click on the link. This museum is based on a wonderful idea. They start in Bremerhaven, on the 8th degree of longitude, and travel once around the world, following this meridian. In the museum you get to visit several countries on the way, it gets hotter and colder, you can see, smell, and touch many items from different cultures, and so much more.

Wouldn't that be a great idea for each family? Look up your point of longitude and travel along that meridian around the globe! Take a look at the website (in English) and get inspired by the museum.

Wow, that is cool. And a great idea for a family project.

And I love Bremerhaven! Our friend who's now in Celle is from just outside Bremen, and the one time we visited his family there, we went to Bremerhaven, but didn't go to this museum.

The museum is fairly recent (opened in 2009), it hadn't been there when I lived close to Bremen. It's a big attraction to many people. Do you know from where outside Bremen your friend is?

Vegesack. I had to look up the spelling! We were there in 1993, the summer before our first child was born, so the museum didn't exist then. We spent many days in Vegesack with our friends, visiting Bremerhaven (where I mainly remember touring an U-Boat), and the artists' community at Worpswede. I still have, somewhere, a lot of postcards of paintings by Paula Modersohn-Becker. I should find them and do some German picture study!

That's where the ferry to Oldenburg crosses the Weser. I know the town well, have even ridden my bike there. And Worpswede is where one of my classmates from school used to live. There is not just Paula Modersohn-Becker, but also her husband Otto, Heinrich Vogeler, Fritz Mackensen, Fritz Overbeck, Hans am Ende, and Carl Vinnen. Or throw in Rainer Maria Rilke and Clara Westhoff. That would make a phantastic study! You could even compare Worpswede with the ideas of the American artist colony in East Aurora by Elbert Hubbard (Roycroft) or with the Secession movement in Vienna.

I have never toured the U-Boat, though.

You are welcome, I thought the concept was perfect for homeschooling families.
