Has anyone seen this new CHC History/Geography book? It looks pretty good from the samples. I've been hoping to find for something like this for a while--- for teaching U.S. geography from a Catholic perspective. I'd love to know if anyone has gotten a good look at it!

Looks like it's for upper elementary so I'm not sure I could use it w/ my 7yo (& K in the fall). Still, I think we'll likely cycle back to the states and get some use out of this in 3yrs. or so.

I ordered it in a heartbeat but haven't got my copy yet. We are doing US geography this year and are so enjoying it that we will most likely continue on with state studies next year as well.

We have several fun and informative books about the states that we use as references, but they are all secular. This one has the Catholic bent I have been looking for but have not been able to find all in one place.

Even if i just use it as a reference for me, it will save me SO much time looking up Catholic points of interest for each state to share with my kids.

I really can't wait to get my copy. I hope I love it as much as I think I will.

I pulled mine out today and took a closer look at it. The text is written in a conversational tone. It has 1-7 pages on each state that includes a "Catholic Heritage" on most states. The workbook has hands-on activities for most states and has review pages and test with fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and write sentences. It has an outline to help guide you through a study of your own state.

I think we will enjoy this program. My oldest will be following along too. It won't be too young for him.

It sounds great. I'm looking forward to trying it.
We're studying the states this year and I actually wrote my own unit on our state, Florida, with Catholic history and places of interest.
I'd be glad to find a resource that has a similar style, but, like Melinda said, have it all in one place!
(and save me the time of having to write another 49 of them!!)

Got my copy:

Pros (IMO)
Nice glossy pages with beautiful artwork and pictures used throughout to illustrate the book. You know how some geography books have grainy black and white pictures, or pictures that are just plain dumb or out of date?
This book is not like that

Good basic information about each state- not so much as to make your eyes glaze over, but enough to give you a good feel for each state.

Featured states have a Catholic heritage page or two separate from their secular facts.

The writing is fairly conversational- way, way better than other books like this.

States are arranged by region, which is very handy if you are studying one area of the country at a time.

There are several "mysteries of history" scattered through out the book that are fun to solve and think about

Cons:
Not every state has a Catholic heritage page . Rats- that was one thing I was really looking for in this book.

Some states have fairly brief write ups- no more than a few paragraphs. Arizona has about half a page (though a lot of the history is covered in the write up on the region). Still, those few paragraphs cover some cool stuff, and the workbook has even more cool things about Arizona in it to ponder.

There is no index in the back to look up a state quickly. You have to look in the front and find it under the correct region, so sometimes you have to hunt to find the region a state has been put into. However, if you are using the CHC lesson plans and following their order, that should not be much of a problem.

Overall, I like this book a lot and would buy it again. I think it does a really good job of handling a lot of information (which could get rather dull) in a very living way.

The CHC curriculum uses it in grade 4. My dc do geography together, so dd, Grade 2, will be listening to the parts I read aloud, and I think that will be fine.

Has anyone continued to use this resource? Any new thoughts? I am considering it for the fall when I will have a 4th and 6th grader working together. I will be using From Sea to Shining Sea as a spine, but I would like it if this CHC resource could be integrated, too. Do you all think that would work? Is it worth the purchase?
