I'm having my 11 year old ds read this book. He hates it! All I saw was good reviews, so I'm discouraged on why I can't get him to read it. He says he can't keep up with everything and everyone. I thought perhaps the reading level is too high for him. He should be able to read at an eighth grade level. The sites I have bookmarked for reading level of books doesn't have this book. Maybe it just needs to be a read aloud book. He is only reading about 15 minutes at a time for about 3 days a week. Maybe lack of reading it daily and interest is causing him to forget inbetween reading and he can't keep up with the characters and events. Do I give up or make him read it?

Any ideas? Maybe I'm just overthinking this!

Try it as a read aloud book and see what happens...and try to end at an exciting part each day that you read.

It may be that the Dutch names are a bit confusing, given that he's not reading about the characters every day.

We did this book as a read aloud and my son (who was probably 12? at the time) loved it. However, my son loves WWII stories and he'd actually seen a windmill before we ever read the book.

Just because something gets good reviews, doesn't mean that every child likes it. There are so many variables in personal preference. I wouldn't stress about it. Look for some alternatives as suggested - try it as a read aloud instead or more frequent.

FYI - it is reading level 4.9

I would bet that he loses momentum with it spread out so much. We did it as a read aloud and the kids begged me not to stop. It is an interesting book and moves pretty fast but it may just be overwhelming to read alone. Just think, you are missing out on a good book if you let him read it alone

I gave it to him to read because we didn't have the time to add it in for a read aloud. Now it is due back at the library, so I will have to add it to our future list.

I think we did it as a read aloud as well. You may look for it on audio though as well.
