Hey Donna Marie!

Do check out How the Heather Looks for a literary geographical tour of England, as visited by a family...one of the best reads ever, with lots of ideas for books to seek out!

For London, my kids enjoyed The Phoenix and the Carpet paired with a street map of the city.

And there's In Search of Swallows and Amazons to go with all the S & A books, which take place in the Lake District, The Norfolk Broads, and the Hebrides.

We just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the children's books by James Herriot. As you probably know, he was a country vet in Yorkshire in the 40's. There is an excellent book called James Herriot's Yorkshire with breath taking pictures of the English countryside. James Herriot's Treasury for Children is illustrated.

If your children are older, they may enjoy the BBC "All Creatures Great and Small" TV show, now on DVD. One caveat, the say +"God"+ a lot, and Tristan is a lady's man, but other than that they are a delight to watch. I will often watch them for a boost on bad days.

Wow, wow, wow...thank you Macbeth, Maddie and Cay! We had read a few of these things but we wanted to put everything we could manage into a notebooking project (a simple one) of images and simple narrations and a couch field trip to England via a familypass movie about England...sorta like a large glorified passport project...if that makes any sense Not to mention starting our Shakespeare project going into the summer!

Donna Marie, I find it ridiculously hard to find books about England. Lots of literature set here, but very little non-fiction for children. Here are a few more ideas for you:

You might enjoy looking at the official British Monarchy website, which has a big section on the Queen's life and times done for her 80th birthday last month.

I did a blog entry on England's patron saint St.George for his feast day last month, with various ideas for books, art, hymns and so on.

One book we have enjoyed is Children of Britain Just Like Me, which is a picture book with snippets about the lives of many different children. I don't know if you would be able to get it from the library. The used copies listed on Amazon are ludicrously expensive.
