Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just did a search and haven't seen Beautiful Feet books brought up on this forum in several years. I'm considering using their guides/liturature selections for my history/literature curriculum but i've heard that they can be anti-Catholic. Has anyone used these and had concerns? Can these guides be used with modifications easily? I don't want to "throw the baby out with the bathwater" because the samples i've seen seem just what we're looking for. Specifically, i'm looking at using the intermediate Medieval history guide. Thanks for any help!!

The Beautiful Feet guides can be very helpful, and have some neat ideas for literature based studies. I have three:

** The Holling C. Holling Geography through Literature guide
** The History of the Horse guide
** The Early American History guide

There is certainly an emphasis on Protestant contributions. Neither of the first two guides I mentioned has anything anti-Catholic in it. The Early American History guide was something I used very loosely several years ago, for living book ideas mostly...I didn't really use the guide at all. I do remember that some books were questionable, and so I'm pretty sure this one would need some tweaking.

I haven't used other history guides though. They are likely to have a Protestant slant in their choice of books, and you would need to really review books well before you used them. Two areas in particular that would be of concern for me, as a Catholic, would be the period of Reformation (there would be nothing about the Counter-Reformation) and the Middle Ages (Medieval History). So...that covers a period from about the 5th century to the 17th century.

I would simply be cautious in using Protestant material to teach periods of history, understanding that they are likely to need some tweaking. I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't use Protestant sources or resources for teaching history (I do sometimes), but you should be prepared to comb through it, possibly weeding some erroneous information or problematic books out, and likely supplementing Catholic contributions as that probably won't be conveyed. Some periods of history, you'll need to be more attentive to.

By the way, I find the Beautiful Feet guides are workable, for the reason that I keep the guide with me, and simply use it as a booklist more or less, sometimes using some of the other ideas for mapwork, etc. By keeping the guide with me and giving assignments to the student directly rather than just handing them the guide and letting them follow it, I am able to add and subtract pretty seamlessly. It would be my hunch that you'd need to do a good bit of adding/subtracting/tweaking with the guide you're looking at. Just a hunch though, so don't take that to the bank!!!

HTH!!!    Maybe someone else here has some direct experience with the Intermediate Medieval history guide, and can offer more specifics to help with your decision! Anyone??
