Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We will be studying the sixteenth century soon and most of the recommended fiction I've found has been action and adventure oriented.   My daughter's, ages eight to thirteen, are not terribly fond of that sort of historical fiction.

I've found one alternative book for my thirteen year old, Towers in the mist by Elizabeth Goudge - a story of a Canon's family in Oxford during early Elizabethan times.   There are shadows caused by the religious persecutions but the main focus is on Oxford and life there.

Any other books which focus on life during the sixteenth century,
suitable for girls eight to thirteen?

Some of these may be out of print:

General 16th century history:
** The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain (probably fine for the 13 yo, gives good sense of life and the customs in mid-century England)
** The King's Fifth by Scott O'Dell (Spanish conquistadors and their search for gold)
** I Will Adventure by Janet Elizabeth Gray (oop Viking Jr books - London and Shakespeare)
** Red Hugh: Prince of Donegal by Robert Reilly (Bethlehem Books - struggle of Ireland against England)
** Will Shakespeare and the Globe Theater by Anne Terry White (oop Landmark - worth the find!)
** Bard of Avon by Diane Stanley
** William Shakespeare and the Globe by Aliki
** Blood Red Crescent by Henry Garnett (Turkish invasion of Christian Europe)
** A Trumpet Sounds by Henry Garnett (oop Clarion books but so worth the find - check your library!!! Great story which illustrates the Catholic underground movement to shelter priests and nurture the faith while persecuted under Queen Elizabeth in England)

Saints from the 16th century:
** St. Philip of the Joyous Heart by Francis Connolly (Vision Books)
** Wilderness Explorer: The Story of Samuel de Champlain (oop Hawthorn Jr Biography)
** Ignatius, Founder of the Jesuits by St. Lawrence, Fr. Ignatius
** St. Ignatius and the Company of Jesus by August Derleth (Vision Books)
** Edmund Campion: Hero of God's Underground by Harold Gardiner (Vision Books)
** Conscience of a King: The Story of St. Thomas More by Margaret Stanley Wrench (oop Hawthorne Junior Biography)
** No Place for Defeat: The Life of St. Pius V (oop Encounter Books - excellent story of the Pope that led the faithful into the Battle of Lepanto praying the Rosary)
** Anything on Our Lady of Guadalupe or St. Juan Diego

For art:
** The Great Artists by Giorgio Vasari
** Anything about Michelangelo
** Michelangelo by Diane Stanley
** (movie) The Agony and the Ecstacy starring Charlton Heston

But not the book The Agony and the Ecstasy...there are adult moments in that book (not just the obvious, but also dissection of cadavers) that would perhaps be too mature for your dd.

E. L. Konigsburg's The Second Mrs. Giaconda, about Leonardo da Vinci, is mysterious and age-appropriate.

Thanks for clarifying. Nancy! Yes - should have been clearer on that. The book is better suited for upper high school students.

I found A Trumpet Sounds as a free download. The theme of this book really interests me.

I did a little more searching, too, and found that Sophia Institute Press has reprinted this book and changed the title. It appears to be a full, unabridged reprint, so that's great news that it can still be found!! The new book title is Crossbows and Crucifixes.

By the way, this book is also great for anyone preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The young hero of the story, Nicholas, illustrates well what is necessary in becoming a soldier of Christ and living out that call. Excellent historical fiction!

Thanks for the recommendations, I now have a few more books to consider.

In particular I'm grateful for OOP recommendations, since they're often removed from book lists.
