My first two kids have started studying Latin at around 4th grade. My 3rd dc says he would rather learn Greek. This year, we did English From the Roots Up and he learned a lot of the Greek and Latin roots. What would be a good reasion NOT to learn greek instead of Latin?

Why have you been doing the Latin? Is it fulfilling the goals you thought it would? Are those goals still important? If they're still important would Greek fulfull the same goals as well as the Latin did?

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I'm such a "rut" person. I get stuck in one and it's scary to go a different direction.
Jodie, your questions are thought provoking and I can see that answering them will help me figure this all out...
At this point, for this ds, I do think Greek would fulfill the goals I have. I'm really interested in having him learn Greek or Latin for vocabulary purposes and the discipline of memorization. If I was focused more on the grammar of the language, I don't think I would try Greek because it's taken me so long to figure out Latin! I also think that if we attended a Latin Mass we would stick with the Latin as that would certainly give us a reason to really learn the language. But since there are no Latin Masses being said around here I do think, at least for a year, Greek would work to fulfill those goals. We can always go back to Latin in 6th grade.
Check! Thanks for helping me figure this out!

I start Greek in grade 5 (coninciding with the study of the Greeks) and Latin in grade 3. We then continue with them both.
Greek is more complex than Latin so a knowledge of Latin is helpful with grammar of Greek.

We tried Greek but stopped it- I have taught the kids Latin for about 4 years, and with 4 kids to teach, I just couldn't find the time to get into the Greek with my guy who liked it!

That's what I'm worrying about Kristie. I'm hoping to find a resource that will make this doable.
I was thinking I should start with just the Greek alphabet then build from there.
Anastasia, Eva, Kristie, or anyone else with experience teaching Greek, what curriculum would you recommend?

I briefly studied Greek (for competition) when I was taking Latin in high school. I don't remember any of it but do remember that the Latin and Spanish background helped.
I think that you ought to encourage your son to try it since he's excited about it. Classical Academic Press has a Greek program. I haven't seen it but we used their Latin for Children when my boys were young and loved it -- easy going text with fun activity book and chant CD.

I used the Greek Code Cracker thingy that I believe was a very cheap pdf download! My kids learned the alphabet in no time!

Athenaze is more for older students, but it's very good. Friends have said that they liked Hey Andrew as well. Do NOT use New Testament Greek in 30 minutes a day: I had to teach from this book when I taught Greek in high school, and it may be the worst language text I've ever seen.
I wrote a Greek text for Grades 4-8, but it's still going the round of publishers, so I don't know when it might be available.

I agree.
I have enrolled my 2nd and 3rd in Lukeion Greek Online. They use Athenaze to teach Attic Greek and participate in the National Greek Exam. It isn't for elementary though; it is high school level.
