Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For anyone who might be looking for an alternative to the H. E. Marshall books, I wanted to pass along this link:

The History of England for Catholic Children (1850)

Here's some background information about the author (Emily Bowles, a convert) and her sources:

Another voice: the history of England for Catholic children of 1850.

I haven't read much of the book yet, but it's been enjoyable so far. I think we'll be making good use of it when we get around to British history.

Interesting contrast in how the two authors deal with the death of Edward the Confessor.

Our Island Story, pp. 92-93

The History of England for Catholic Children, pp. 77-78

I've never been comfortable with the way H. E. Marshall made so many historical figures into insulting caricatures. (This goes back to age 11 or 12, when I first came across her book "Kings and Things" in our school library.) When those historical figures are also canonized saints -- in this case, the patron saint of kings, and for a couple of centuries the patron saint of England -- it's especially hard to take.   And when he's being called "selfish" for preferring to build churches rather than fortify his castles... well, that just makes no sense.

Emily Bowles' descriptions are also vivid, but her tone seems far more gentle, thoughtful, and most of all spiritual.   I'm very thankful that this book is available.

St. Edward, Confessor, pray for us.

Yea, that part always rubbed me the wrong way as well, which is why I have decided against Marshall for our history studies. IMHO This Country of Mine is even worse. So full of "opinions."
I'll be looking into Bowles. Thanks for introducing her.

Now..what to use for British history for my high school aged son next year?

Oh wow Eleanor! I'm off to check it out

I remember an interesting discussion about English history here and here and Kathryn has begun writing a book but I think these are all for the younger child.

Theresa
I'm going to think about your ds, I'm sure there must be something.

Eleonor thanks for the link. I've been slowly building our CM library and Marshall was not one I've purchased or read. It's nice to have an alternative with the Catholic child in mind !
