Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone else disappointed? I thought this would be kid appropriate but after watching the first disc I'm thinking about throwing it away. A man touching a slaves breasts to make sure she would be good for breeding, mentioning homosexuality and prostitutes, extended childbirth scene... Why would they give these away to educators if they are not appropriate for children? Why do they feel the need to include this stuff in the history of the country? I was excited for these CDs but now disappointed

That is a good heads up, Suzette. We did get ours recently as well, but we haven't watched them. We did watch a couple of the episodes when they aired in the spring, but obviously not those. I did find some of the ones we watched to have a few scenes that were pretty graphic in violence, but what you shared is more worrisome. I'll definitely pre-watch and pick and choose what we use in our school - but there were aspects of the ones we did see that I thought were very well done and engaging.

That is so disappointing, isn't it? I don't think this show was targeted for students but because it was viewed as"educational" by producer, therefore they see it as something to encouraged as a learning tool. By getting on the mailing list to receive this, I've been getting the A&E educators newsletter as well. I find that they are promoting lots of shows for educational use - probably not all appropriate for all ages.

We have only watched one episode, the second to last. While it wasn't disturbing in the way Suzette describes, it was "fluffy" to me - lots of slick graphics/cgi (some repeated way too many times) as opposed to actual footage of historic events (MLK's speeches are mentioned but there are no clips of him speaking - although I know his family is very, very protective of any use of his words or TV footage). Compared to, say, Ken Burns' Civil War series, it's much less "meaty." I was disappointed.

We haven't received ours yet, but I'm very sorry to hear about it. I was looking forward to letting my dd watch them as part of our American History study this year. I guess we'll have to skip it . It sounds like there are too many things we're not ready to discuss and explain to our ten year old (as mature as I think she is).

Just goes to prove just because its free doesn't mean its good. The obsession with indoctrinizing our children into "adult" issues too early is very sad. Another reason I'm so glad we hs. My children's innocence can last longer by the wholesome things we choose to educate them with. And the way we choose to introduce those issues will be in a more healthy/faithful manner than what they would otherwise get.

Our library carries The Unfinished Nation dvds. Has anyone watched these? Could they be a good subsitute for our 5th grader?

Thanks for the warning. We received ours, but haven't had a chance to preview.

Wow. Thanks for letting us know. I should have known to preview them but have been so busy with the beginning of the year (I usually preview in the summer and they arrived after we started) I completely forgot.

God Bless,
Barb
