Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know there were some book recommendations/threads on this topic for younger children but cannot find them. Anybody remember? Thanks.

Is this the thread you were thinking of?

Least We Forget

It is an older thread but the only one specificially on 9-11, though there are 9-11 ones mentioned in other threads some. There also are likely more books published since then, like the one Jodie mentioned.

Was reading A Picture Perfect Childhood just last night and Cay had this book listed under Sept as a Remembrance for 9/11:

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers

I guess I need to read on the technical side how to insert just the book name without all this other stuff. Some day.....

I fixed the link, Kathryn. Here is that technical info on how to insert the book name with link - 5th post down.

Heather, it was difficult to find the old thread in a search- I had to try 9/11, 9-11, September 11, Sept. 11. For some it recognized so many threads because it rcognized all that had a post on that date. Numbers are really hard to search. There may even be another thread I'm not finding.

Here are a few other books I found that sound like they could be good. I need to check them out.
I Was Born on 9-11
September Roses
Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey

What are we both doing up so late Mary?

Yes - frustrating not to be able to find these. Maybe adding some tags to the original posts on those threads would help in future? World Trade Center, terrorist attacks, etc.

Bumping this. I know it was yesterday, but we didn't make it to the library until yesterday. My son is engrossed in the books about 9/11. Wish there were more -- I know it's a delicate subject. My library only has a few, and most are the dry fact filled books.

At what age are you all introducing this? G is very much into natural destruction (tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, etc.). However, he's a sensitive fellow, and at 6.5, I decided not to discuss it w/ him this year. I almost mentioned it, though.

America Is Under Attack: September 11, 2001: The Day the Towers Fell
by Don Brown is very good. Have you seen that one, Jenn?

Age to introduce? I really don't know as I don't think I thought about it consciously...with older children who were very aware of it when it happened it was just always a part of the collective memory of the family so the younger ones weren't unaware of references. I think sometime around 7 or 8 or so my youngest (who was 1 year old at the time) asked more questions and we talked about it more.

Yes, that is the best one our library has. Ds is poring over it. The fire boat one is also good.

We have been very slow to introduce. Last year ds was 8 and I had only a simple discussion and he saw part of the memorial service. This year he wanted to know more--I am following his lead because he is super sensitive also.

We don't avoid talking about it. I don't go out of my way to put pictures or vivid descriptions in the way of the younger kids. And we talk about any reason we put out our flag. So at least a mimimal explaination is usually given no matter the age.

I wish I could get these books here in Canada. My dad was in the Pentagon that day (he's fine, though) so our discussions are very close to home.

My eight year old was very curious this year so we sat down and talked about it and I showed him some of the less disturbing footage (ugh... it's ALL disturbing, but we didn't watch the jumpers.)

Even then I could see he was sort of stunned for the rest of the morning. He almost cried several times. I felt terrible for him. I think books would have been a much gentler way to find out some of the details.

But then sometimes I wonder if having that STRONG emotional reaction to this is... right? If that makes any sense.

We just read Fire Boat- what a great story! Interesting for so many reasons... not just 9/11
