Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi there. We've been using Story of the World, I love the way it's laid out, easy to use, has map work and colouring pages, etc. With my older ones, we tended to to book 1 & partway through book 2, and then stop, as I became concerned; I wanted to ensure more Church History was included. Sadly, I didn't find much that suited, so we eventually wandered back to book 1 again, and never did cover much in the way of modern history.

But, with my younger ones, we've kept going with SOTW, and are now in book 3. I like it, but... they just aren't learning very much! I'll have them narrate, but it seems my 3 young girls simply don't respond well to me reading a chapter aloud while they listen or colour.

We've been using NOEO science; they love it. It uses real books, picture books. It seems having the visual as well as the audio is a real hit. They happily complete a narration page and an exercise or experiment, and they remember the stuff!

So, I'd like to find something similar for history. Something that uses picture books, and has activities to bring the learning alive, along wth some map work. I do have the ABCs of Christian Culture, I found that excellent, but it is designed for ages 10 and up, and I think it would be a little above them at this stage.

Suggestions? Is there a list of picture books to read somewhere? I can't race out and purchase heaps of books for each time period, but a few, basic books is what I am looking for.

I have most of the Catholic Mosaic Books, which I could also incorporate, and the books that go with the ABCs of Christian Culture. I'm sure I could put something together will all I have, but a ready-to-go curriculum would be great!

I hope that all makes sense.

Thankyou, and God bless,

Linda.

Linda,

This is the kind of topic which makes 4Real member giddy, so I'm sure you will get no shortage of advice!

My oldest is only six, but instead of Story of the World, I'm using A Little History of the World by Gombrich and First Timeline as pegs for history study as well as suggestions from this booklist which coordinates various picture books with the timeline.

A lot of the books in the book list I linked were available from our local library.

Also, you might check out Winter Promise for inspiration and book suggestions for teaching history with living literature. Lots of unit studies, too, geared toward teaching multiple ages should you want something laid out similar to your science program.

Isn't there one called Connecting With History that is a lot like that--a guide to living books?

Yes. Connecting With History is the program that RC History offers. They offer their CWH books at St. George's books. Like Lindsay, this is one of my favorite ways to collect book ideas - St. George's booklists broken down by ages and time periods.

Thankyou, thankyou! I think I may hide myself away for the day, and check them all out!

Honestly, after 8 children, and 14 years of homeschooling, you'd think I've had it figured by now.....

There's always so much more to learn, and always lovely, new books to puchase!

I really must have a look at RC History - one of 'those' items I've heard so much talk about, but have never actually seen it.

My main problem is I live in the 'Australian Bush', with no other homeschoolers nearby, so I can't pop over for a coffee anywhere and check these things out. Not to worry, at least it is peaceful, and I get to keep my title of 'parcel queen', when it all arrives in the post!

God bless, and thankyou again,

Linda.

I clicked!      Now there's even more to make me giddy!

See you again in a couple of months.......

Linda

The CWH guide isn't expensive as wee can download it always a big plus for us gals downunder.

The books can add up, but if you wander and have a look at the list you may already have many.

Hi Erin - ah, downloads - how delightful!

I couldn't find from where I could purchase a download, though - do you have a link?

Thankyou!

Another thing to look at is Our Father's House has ABCs of Christian Culture. It makes a great spine with plenty of maps, etc. and then use everyone's booklists to put it together. For the age range you are talking about, this is another thing to look at.

Hi Janet - yes, I have it, and all the books to match. I really do love that programme, and I have today pulled it all out to have yet another look. I'll need to 'tweak' it a little for my younger ones, but it may just be the one I'll use.

We're up to early modern history, so I don't think RC history will be the one for now; actually, my older ones will be returning to the ABCs of Christian Culture in January, when we will complete the final four units (we took a break this year to concentrate on completing the Student Intensive Continuation Course, and they are simply reading through books 3 & 4 of SOTW so they at least have an overview of World History).

So, I'm thinking with my younger ones, I may do the ABCs for the rest of this year; starting at the beginning, but using only the resources recommended for the younger age group, which will mean we'll work through it at a faster pace than usual. And if we can get through the first six units in that way, next year, we'll all be up to the same unit!

Ah, we have a plan! OK, so they usually don't work out as smoothly as I'd like, but, you never know.....

Oh....that is such a good feeling...when you have something on your shelf already and you're inspired to pull it out and tweak it creatively and make it work!
