We are spending a few weeks with picture books learning about slavery and the underground railroad before moving on to the Civil War.
What it the absolute best read aloud for the Underground Railroad? My listeners are very attentive to exciting stories, but then stay awake worrying all night if the stories are too exciting.

Have you tried any of the American Girl historical books? Abby would be the one set during the Civil War. I find that they tend to be somewhat accurate but mild enough that they don't overwhelm the kids.

Hi,
Your're younger kids might enjoy "Follow the Drinking Gourd". If it's not too far from you, the Harriet Tubman Museum/House is in Auburn, NY. My family enjoyed our visit there.
God bless,
Mary-NY

I don't know if this is the absolute best book about The Underground Railroad but my youngest two (then aged 10 and 7) enjoyed Freedom Train by Dorothy Sterling. I believe it is listed in the Sonlight catalog.

Well, my suggestion might be too exciting but we thoroughly enjoyed Underground to Canada. I think it is written by Barbara Smucker (I could be wrong about that name.) It was a very well-written book.

We read Underground to Canada first when my kids were in 5th and 3rd. Next time we read it they were in 8th, 6th, 3rd and 1st. Loved it both times- but it is exciting and difficult. My kids did fine with it, but it might be too much for really sensitive ones...

Suzanne, my kids were 9,8 and 6 when we read it. My youngest had no problem with it but I have always read books that were a bit too big for her so she is probably a bit de-sensitized when it comes to literature.

JuliaT,
Thank you so much for your referral of "Underground to Canada" by Barbara Smucker!
Excellent!
I was up until 4:30 this morning reading it - I couldn't put it down!
Looking forward to reading it OUTLOUD now
Made me proud to be a Canadian!
Borrowing "Follow the Drinking Gourd" from the library - thank you Mary K!
We are going to listen to the audio version of it, as we head to Catholic Family Land
Can't wait to try out some of these others!
