I'm thinking on State history today and have a few questions.

When do you cover State history {grade}? Do you cover it in both Elementary and Middle School? We're using CHC fwiw.

We're in Texas - are there any home school texts that emphasize the Catholic history of Texas?

Would you spend an entire year on Texas history? I was a history major in college, and have so many ideas for doing Texas history that we could easily cover an entire school year, but my knowledge is patchy in places, especially about the religious history. We also live in San Antonio, so there are ample opportunities for field trips, living history presentations, etc.

from what I remember.. state history was taught in 4th and 5th grades.. and I know the Constitution was taught in 8th grade (couldn't "graduate" 8th grade without passing the test)

And then in high school.. world history was sophmore year and us history was junior year and civics and economics was senior year..

and then you got to college and learned the same things again.

Where I grew up, state history was taught in 4th and 8th grades. (We finished U.S. history and did Civics and State History in grade 8.)

I would consider either doing a year one time during elementary/middle or a semester in grade 4 and another in grade 8. Because you're in such an important city, historically, you can have a lot of fun with your state history studies.

This is a bit off-topic, but we have done state history in more than one state, because we move fairly frequently. Field trips and hands-on activities really help reinforce the long-ago during colonial times part...

State history was taught in 7th or 8th grade for us (in Texas).

With my older two we covered it in pieces as it pertained to units (studying missions) and then did a unit on Texas for a cub scout badge around 4th grade. For the unit we read through The Story of Texas by John Edward Weems, worked on outline maps and flags, read a variety of biographies from the library and visited the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin and several missions in San Antonio. It was not really thorough, though, and only took us a couple of months or so. I don't know of a Texas history book with Catholic emphasis.
