Just wanted to let you know that the Eastern Asia Continent Study is up.
http://ebeth.typepad.com/serendipity/2010/03/continents-and- cultures-eastern-asia.html
There is also a link to a lapbook on China with pictures and explanations to help you in visualizing how a lapbook is put together.
Happy Continent Hopping! Enjoy the rabbit trails.

Thank you, Cindy, for your interest in this topic.
In an effort to serve our members and after prayerful reflection on Church documents, and because Serendipity has identified itself as being influenced by Waldorf, the moderators of 4Real have determined that Serendipity falls into a category that is beyond the scope of our discussion here. We feel we have neither the right nor the tools to decide which pieces of a Waldorf style curriculum are actually Anthroposophic, and which are not, therefore further discussion needs to be directed to the authors of Serendipity off board. Please read our policy for further details.

I'm not sure how a unit study on Eastern Europe constitutes anything Waldorf - or needs moderating therefore. The study is living books about the countries in Eastern Europe, and studying saints from that area, talking to priests - even encouraging rabbit trails and lapbooking - all of which are things that happen all over this board. Sorry if I don't get how this falls into this category.

This is just odd to me. Elizabeth Foss's own Serendipity can't be posted on the "real learning" board??
Sorry, just seems kind of funny to me! (and, I very well could have misunderstood something along the way.)

Cindy and Candace,
Because Serendipity has identified itself as being influenced by Waldorf, it is outside the purview of this board and its moderators to determine which elements of Serendipity are influenced by Waldorf and which are not. In an effort towards consistency, we have put the above mentioned boundary in place. Please direct any further questions to moderators via pm.
But it would be great to brainstorm about studying Eastern Europe or saints from that area!

I understand your confusion, Candace. The history of this board is not contained in the public record anywhere. In order to clear up any misconceptions I offer the following explanation:
This board is not the "Real Learning" Board. It is the 4Real Board. It was founded by a group of women working as a team. Elizabeth was among them and so was I. Over the past 5 years, some of those founding women have moved on to other endeavors, while some are still current moderators. When Elizabeth felt she needed to take a less-active role here, we gave her the title "Founder" to indicate that she was still involved in the big picture but not the day-to-day. Over time, she focused more of her energies elsewhere and less at 4Real, eventually choosing to withdraw from moderating altogether. She kept the Founder title because she was one of the founding women and this board has been blessed by her involvement.
Links to, or materials from, Serendipity cannot be posted here because Serendipity has self-identified with Waldorf. Our board has a policy of not discussing Waldorf because the moderators are not capable of moderating such discussions.
I hope that this clarifies any confusion. If you wish to discuss this further, you are welcome to PM me.

Janette -
I'm sorry, but could you please direct me to where Serendipity identifies itself with Waldorf? I can not find anything on that site that claims any connection to Waldorf. Have I missed something somewhere? I was merely trying to share a wonderful living books geography unit - one that I use in my home. I have searched and searched to see where Serendipity aligns itself with Waldorf and can not find anything stating that. If you could show me where it states that, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for asking for clarification, Cindy.
There are many places in the past where its authors have identified Serendipity as integrating Waldorf. It is not my job or responsibility to seek those for you, but in the interest of illustrating the connection for our members I will give you one instance.
From the Serendipity blog on May 22, 2009 in response to a question about math gnomes:
Quote:
My best suggestion is that you purchase a Waldorf math book and adapt it to use with the tray and the gnomes. The most beautiful thing about Waldorf is relationship. Each teacher brings herself to the curriculum, infuses it with her creativity, and presents it in a way she knows will resonate with the students she knows so well. Whether Katherine writes the story or the story is in the curriculum you intend to buy, the story will work best if it's yours. So, use the materials you purchased and made. They will mesh beautifully with any of the published Waldorf stories with which I'm acquainted. If the story in the book uses squirrels and nuts, simply change the stories to gnomes and gems. You can do that!
Serendipity was created to answer a very loud question about how we were integrating pieces of Waldorf, Charlotte Mason, and Montessori in a Catholic home. |
