Here's a link to the resources and rough outline of our unit study for BOTH the Winter Olympics and the Paralympic Games in Vancouver. The Opening Ceremony is tomorrow night and the Olympics run from February 12 thru the 28th and then the Paralympics are from March 12 thru 21.
We'll be doing all kinds of cross-curricular stuff ... I'm particularly fascinated with the link to the Inuit Culture evidenced by the mascots and logo (a stylized Inuksuk). Can't wait to try our hands at some of the art of this amazing culture!

I'll be updating my unit study post as we find new/use new resources ... but here's one that I thought I'd specifically mention:
NBC's Olympic site... you can put in your zipcode and track "hometown athletes" ... there's a widget you can add to your blog/website/fb page ...
Lots of cool stuff there!

I'll bet you've already seen the 2010 Winter Olympics lapbook and study guide from Curriclick. I ordered it on a whim (only $4!), and it's really been nice so far.

Here is Homeschool Share's awesome free Winter Olympics lapbook!
Winter Olympic Lapbook
And here is my blog entry with book titles, etc.
Our unit plans for Olympics
We started our unit study this week...and today we made 2 fun crafts (pics up soon.)
We used paper plates (cut out the center) and painted them the colors of the olympic rings, stapled together for our own rings!
And we twisted posterboard into a cone shape, added fire colored tissue paper for our own torches!
Thanks for your links, too, Mary...I'm off to check them out too!!

Mary,
What a great gathering of resources...
I created my own mini-unit with library books and crafts & printables from the website-- Activity Village.
So far we've studied:
Ancient and Modern Olympic history
Completed a Canada lapbook
created a poster to chart country and medal status
made olympic torches
had our own Wii olympic races with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded (printables from AV)
We also had a "Count-down to Olympics" display with pull off tags from AV
tonight we will hold our torches while wearing our red, white, and blue outfits as we watch the opening ceremonies!
I still need to think of some foods....
perhaps pizza with olympic rings shaped pepperoni?

Very cool, Lynette ... we're getting into it around here! The kids can't wait for the opening ceremony tonight!
I really like that Activity Village website ... I'd never seen it before but it has some GREAT ideas and things for kids ...

Anyone have thoughts on last nights events? We really enjoyed the evening - what a great day for the USA.
Hey, a question. How many of you don't read any news coverage ahead of time - just wait to watch the coverage? I have to admit yesterday I cheated and looked to see if Vonn had done it. Mostly I try not to though.

We love the coverage, even if it makes for late nights -- it is so worth it!
