Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, we're well into U.S. history - taking 1 1/2 years to do it, as we did with ds. I'm already dreading next fall. With my son, we used The Century For Young People as a spine, but it wasn't really meaty enough on its own. This worked okay for ds - my history guy - but dd is science-oriented and only studies history because she has to. She won't fill in the missing gaps by reading independently, watching History Channel shows, etc. as ds did.

We live in an area (DC Metro) famous for colonial and Civil War sites/museums/battlefields, and of course we have the wonderful resources of the Smithsonian, but I am really wondering how I'll get dd to learn about, say, the Civil Rights movement or WWI and WWII in depth from the U.S. perspective.

If you know of any good living books for 20th century history (or books to use as a secondary spine - I really don't want to buy a whole bunch of new stuff), please share your ideas. (What didn't work, too...) I'm hoping to be ready to move ahead whenever we hit 1900.

P.S. - We do have time; we just finished 1783.
