I am thinking about putting together a unit on world architecture and am looking for suggestions for books, websites, and hands-on activities. I envision a "world tour" look at some great buildings along with a study of their architectural elements, some history, etc. I am think8ing of a culminating activity of a scale model of one building of choice.
Resources I have so far are the David Maccauley books Pyramid, Mill, Castle, Cathedral and Mosque. I also have a few books on world architecture. What I really need are some literature suggestions and website/activity resources?
So...any ideas???

No time to look but we did a unit on architecture ions ago. My ds was in cub scouts at the time. Boy Scouts of America has a great study guide on architecture.

Last year, at a CM conference held at Gardner-Webb I attended a breakout session on Architecture. The woman, who got her BA in architecture, gave a list of resources. Turns out Macaulay wrote 15 or so books abut different facets of architecture (you might check your library). She also suggested Dover as having a bunch of books.

Here are some other books she recommended:
Architecture: The World's Greatest Buildings
Buildings (Eyewitness Guide)
What it Feels Like to be a Building
Structures or Why Things Don't Fall Down

Here are some websites she mentioned:
Archkiddecture
Building Big (PBS)
Great Buildings Collection
National Builidng Museum in D.C.
Looking at Buildings (from the UK)

She also suggested Froebel blocksas being a necessity for any architecture student and alot of fun to play with!

Books by or about John Ruskin, Frank Lloyd Wright are also good. She suggested studying architecture in conjunction with history or math.

Get Hillyer's book, "A Child's History of Architecture". I just LOVE this book. It's written in the same entertaining style as "A Child's History of the World", for fourth grade and up, I'd say (though I sometimes have my older children read it for edification, can you tell I really like the book!

) I think it's out of print, but you can still find it fairly easily.

We've also enjoyed Anchor Blocks. They come in various types of sets, with nice, smoothy-feeling stone blocks that you can use to create neat architectural renditions. No reading involved, even your little ones can jump in for the easier buildings.

Last but not least, someone on this thread recommended a website called Wierd Al a while back. He claims he can teach anything using, yes, the humble Lego block! Browsing thru his different courses, I thought the architecture class looked the best. The only caveat is that I tried in vain to register for the class, and simply couldn't "get in". But then, I'm computer challenged, so maybe it was me. Hmmmmmm. Perhaps this conversation will inspire me to try again.... The architecture class looked great, to me, and definitely appropriate for young Lego Headz.

Can you tell me some more about the West Point bridge contest? What is it like and how do your children use it? It's just that the software download will take half a day for me (the horrors of dial-up) so I want to make sure it will be worth it before I do.
