We just finished reading Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrimsas a read aloud. I had no idea! I did not know he'd been stranded in England for years, then just when he got back home he was kidnapped and sold as a slave. And then when he *finally* got back home again... his tribe had been wiped out by small pox.
I knew about the small pox, but not the rest 
I have been sad about this for days...

 I also learned a lot more about Squanto after reading that book to my kids.

He is amazing isn't he? I think even though there are books about him, his sacrifice isn't really acknowledged as much as it should be. I feel like the stuff I read about him says "he was so nice". But he was amazing...more than nice, above and beyond!

Absolutely! He was amazing, and I never knew. I mean, I always liked him from the first time I heard his story in first grade, but there was never a "rest of the story" moment during my school years to show how amazing he really was.
This living education thing is good for the old brain, you know?

I got this book from a Scholastic book order when I was little! (Do you remember those book order clubs) My mom never let me get any books, but we are part Algonquin, and for some reason she thought it was good to get this book---I read it and re-read it, and now it is a yearly read aloud! When I was little we didn't have much, and no extra for books, so this was a tremendous treat, and I still smile when I see the cover.

We have Squanto and the First Thanksgiving. In this book, Squanto is captured and sold as a slave in England - learns English - his master releases him. He returns with Captain John Smith but is re-captured by the captain of one of John Smith's other ships and sold as a slave in Spain - this time he is 'saved' by Catholic monks, who converted him to Christianity.
When they allow him to go back, he finds his people has been wiped out by small pox so he joins a neighboring tribe, who are keeping their distance from the white man. However, Squanto takes pity on them and helps them out BECAUSE he knows English and BECAUSE he is a Christian. This never would have happened if he hadn't been captured - twice - and had no family/tribe left. God works in mysterious ways.

sonlight core 3 book! My 4th and 5th borns just finished reading it. Excellent!
also in the core is Pocahantas and the Strangers, which my dd greatly enjoyed.

Melinda, we just finished reading this here a few weeks ago too, and I felt the same way. In school, we only got the part about him helping the Pilgrims, never the background story. (much more euro-centric/white-centric teaching back then maybe)
We're reading Pocahontas now but I must say it's not grabbing us nearly as well. The story's OK, but the level of the reading is really low, so for a read-aloud it's not very engaging.
