Discovered yesterday that one of my girls (I won't say which  ) thought Hitler was a Viking. So...there you go.

The big joke around here was when my then preteen son couldn't remember who Rosa Parks was, but his then 10 yr old sister knew. She never let him forget it, either!

Not history, but vocabulary. I drove beyond a business van today (custom counters, tiles,etc.) They advertise custom fabrications! Wonder if they know they're lying to their customers? Would a plain lie cost less?

Cay, too funny. I think I paniced when one of my dd wanted to know why the schools were taking off for Martin Luther King day (and why they had renamed a few streets around here). I was a bit baffled until she started explaining her confusion because she thought that the state wasn't allowed to decide in favor of one religion over another and why would we have a holiday celebrating the founder of the Lutherans.
Another child was well-read about history but had only read things - never heard them spoken so when her Latin teacher jokingly refered to Mao - she had no idea who in the world he was talking about. She got the lecture about how their education was sorely neglected and in the process when he mentioned the Little Red book, she immediately said, "Oh, you mean Mayo."
Needless to say, we had a talk about the difference between Martin Luther and Martin Luther King - and that Mayo is either slang for mayonaisse or short for a cancer research/medical facility and Mao is the Chinese communist leader who wrote the Little Red Book.
However, so as to make them feel better, I did share with them my 8th grade page and half I wrote on the German General Kamikazi who led a campaign in Africa during WWII. My teacher was very entertained and I did use quite a few details from the African campaign to make the whole thing sound like I knew what I was talking about. However, I never, ever had a moments lapse of memory about kamikazi and its meaning after that. (This was one of those short Id questions where we were supposed to define/identify. I was always blabby - even then and even when I had no idea what kamikazi was; just took a stab - everything that I included about the African campaign was factual; just had nothing at all to do with kamikazi and there certainly was no such general.
