My 6th grader told me she wants to study WWII this year. I think she wants to because her Pawpaw served in this war but, since we did the Great Depression at the end of last "school" year, it forms a natural flow w/ our timeline.
Anyway, she's a very advanced reader but I don't want an overly scholarly book. I want an enjoyable, informative book that holds her interest and treats the holocaust respectfully and sensitively. It should also be a good starting point for study of the war.
I'm looking through Sonlight catalog and Laura Berquist's booklist but which chapter book would you all suggest an 11 yr old girl start with?

I recently came across some new WW11 titles I hadn't seen at Treasure Chest for Tweens Kicking myself now that I didn't mark which ones were WW11 books, so you will have to open all tabs  I think they were mostly towards the bottom of the list.
I'll have to think some more on other titles. But first to mind is When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, and I Am David (but that would be too much for an 11yr old)and Ian Seraillier's Silver Sword (great book)oh and Hilda Van Stockum's books. Don't forget St Maximilian Kolbe.

Cay - we did a very extensive WWII study a couple of years ago - my kids loved so many of the books. I will try and dig out my plans for it - but off the top, my daughter loved The Borrowed House. I have a quick summary of our unit study here. Treasures of the Snow was also a favorite. Also Twenty and Ten. I literally have a hundred titles we read - picture and chapter books - but did not have a blog then so have to look through USB or paper files.

I have some really fantastic WWII books, but they are all out of print, I think. The Cornerstones of Freedom have a number of books focusing on different battles such as the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The other thing is that if you live near New Orleans, there is supposed to be a top notch veterans museum there. (I think it is one of the few/only musuem on the 42nd - thunderbirds) and is one we would really like to see. We have a local veterans museum and a WWII veteran who was a navigator in B-17 took us through, showed us the briefing room, used one of his actual missions as the example. He even walked us through a B-17 and told us all kinds of stories about his missions. Various veterans took us through, showed us the equipment (very much up my boys alley). They had maps, equipment displays, first hand experience and great sensitivity to children. They were so grateful that there were young folks interested in this at all anymore.

2 of my daughters enjoyed studying WWII, I'll ask for ideas tomorrow but I can recommend Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I am David made me cry! much to intense for an 11yo. The Devil's Arithematic is good and a great movie. Paperclips-it's a movie.

Number the Stars, for sure. Best WWII intro novel I've ever read.
Snow Treasure is another good choice.
The Winged Watchman is also excellent. It's told from a boy's point of view, but is very well-written. The Borrowed House is also very, very good but has a more mature theme (Nazi soldiers take an inappropriate interest in the teenage female narrator, for one thing). I would not let my 11 y.o. dd read it right now; she's still on the "kid" end of the spectrum.

A good picture book (to supplement) is The Cats in Krasinski Square by Karen Hesse. We read it a few years ago, but from what I remember it is about people sneaking food into the Warsaw ghetto for the Jews who were barricaded in there. It is a fictionalization, not a true story.

I'm so glad I asked. Even though this is my 4th child to go through this time period, I always need that in-service teacher prep. 
So many of these books I did, in fact, forget about. Thank you for reminding me. And there's a couple of new ones we haven't read. Yay! 
I found our WWII selection from when Garrett studied it. We have:
* I Have Lived a Thousand Years
* The Upstairs Room
* From Anna
* When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
* Number the Stars
* Twenty and Ten
* Hilda Van Stockum's books
So we'll get started w/ these. And, of course, lots of picture books.  I'd like to see about I am David and The Borrowed House too. My oldest ds read Elie Wiesel but he was in high school at the time.
Janet, thanks for reminding me of the museum in NO. Mark took his dad there years ago when it first opened and his dad still had most of his mental facilties. The children and I have never been. Great end-of-the-year field trip.
