Thought I'd share about the fun we're having with this.

I hadn't planned anything for Black History Month, but my eldest (11)wanted to use a big project board that was just sitting around, so she asked to do display of facts about Wilma Rudolph. We had fun getting that together, but it led to another fun project: Lizzy asked for an idea for her own project, and Emily suggested she do something on Harriet Tubman.

Lizzy decided to make a video about her life. She read four books about her (Minty, Go Free or Die, A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman and another bio I can't remember the name of ... Follow the Drinking Gourd is still on reserve at the library) and we started filming. The first day she walked around fretting: "How will I pull this off? I am scriptwriter, director, actress, filmer ... Oh! This will be a miracle!" Too cute.

I have, so far, played the roles of the mean mistress, Minty's mother, and a fellow slave named Amanda. Then I was placed behind the camera so that Lizzy could get in on the acting fun.

She has learned so much about Harriet Tubman and we've had a great time making her video. The kids have been so creative in their use of props and costumes. One of my favorite scenes so far has to be Lizzy (playing a nasty overseer) riding up to Minty on her "horse" -- a large stuffed Tigger.

This is just great, Karen! I had never thought of encouraging the girls to use our video camera for school. What a great way to sneak in narration and give them lots of opportunity to show off their artistic side.
