My dh has an appointment tomorrow in Philadelphia (he is currently unemployed) and it just occurred to us that we might as well ride up with him and make a field trip out of it since it wouldn't be any extra for all of us to ride along. We will be studying American history this year so great timing, but no prep time. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, the only things I know of are the Liberty Bell and the Franklin Institute (from my 5th grade field trip!).

Also, harder to find info with short notice - anything Catholic that might be interesting. And a place for Mass would be great since we are leaving bright and early.

Hi Barb,

There is so much to see! I'll just touch on some things near the Liberty Bell. There is a Visitor's Center with an underground parking garage not too far from the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell is free but there is security where they want to see your bags, etc.

Independence Hall is also free but you need tickets (You get them at the Visitor's Center). Most of the time the tickets are "sold" out early in the morning for the late morning and the afternoon. If you do get tickets, you have to get to Independence Hall early enough for a baggage check.

There are free story telling benches through out that area. Maps are readily available of the locations of these storytelling benches. Just ask for one. We had a great time visiting each bench. Actually, it was a highlight of our visit and we've been known to quote some of these stories now.

Not too far away is Franklin court where you can learn about Ben Franklin (free also), catch a cartoon called Ben and Me based on Lawson's book and see Franklin's printing press in action. We bought a replica of the Declaration of Independence that was printed from Franklin's shop. The post office is next door if you wanted to mail something.

You can also walk to the Betsy Ross House. There was a fee for that. The National Constitution Center is not far from the Visitor's Center. We didn't get a chance to visit but hope to in the future.

There are vendors around the Visitor's Center, at the Betsy Ross house and a food court at The Bourse. The Bourse is a shopping area across the lawn on the opposite side of the Visitor's Center. Someone at the Visitor's Center should be able to point that out to you. Bathrooms are at the Visitor's Center and across the street from Independence Hall.

There is also a portrait gallery that is air conditioned on the same side of the street as Independence Hall. We enjoyed that when it got hot. It was nice and cool inside.

There are several shrines in Philadelphia. Here's a link with some more information for you.

Old St. Mary's Church is the first Catholic Church to be built in Philadelphia. It is located at 252 S 4th St. You may also want to check out
Masstimes.org to find out when and where Mass will be said based on your location.

The Franklin Institute is near the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul which is on the other side of Philadelphia. It's not really close to Historic Philadelphia at all. However, it is close to the Franklin Institute and the Museum of Natural Science. We spent the whole day at each of those museums.
