And I do not mean American Colonial history. My 16 yods loves history. He has read every history book that I own and some of them multiple times. He has studied American History, Ancient History, and Medieval History. Now he wants to study Colonial history from a more global standpoint.
In other words, as he explains it to me, Europe during their colonial times. So what is out there that he can read in the way of living books? And what sort of a spine should I use? Although I admit that he has his time line down pretty well and has a working knowledge of what happened in history, some sort of a guide would be welcomed.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm a fan of HE Marshall and she has a British Empire book, and there's also the Story of the World series - the last two have quite a bit on British Colonialization.
I'm assuming this is what you mean? If he means the times Europe has been "colonized" by foreign peoples, you'll probably want to look at those individual time periods: Mongol Empire (GK got as far as Turkey, I believe), Rome (obviously), Golden Age of Islam. Is that helpful at all?

He is not necessarily looking for British colonization because he has already studied that in his American history. What he wants is the same time period (colonial), but looking at the other European countries during this time.

Has he read Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples? That might be a good starting point. I'd also take a look at the MODG 11th grade history/literature reading list. While this is predominantly a medieval list, there are titles that deal with the reformation.
How about Hillaire Belloc's books: How the Reformation Happened or Characters of the Reformation. The latter title goes from Henry VIII through William of Orange.
The the late 16th and 17th centuries was a time of religious wars in Europe, and the entanglement of the nations of Spain and England is an interesting topic to explore. There were also big things happening in science and the whole period of the enlightenment. All good things to explore and see how they relate to the formation of the US.

Valerie, we are currently using that MODG syllabus. He is currently reading about the Reformation and the Inquisition. I believe that we have both of those books by Belloc. I will recommend them to him. I think what he wants to study is the late 17th through the 19th century. He is certainly fascinated by the medieval history and what is happening in Europe at that time.
Erin, thank you for the book list. His interests go everywhere, so I am sure this will come in handy. I always find it comforting to have recommendations from other homeschooling mums.

Do you have Spielvogel's Western Civilization? I just recently picked up a used copy of the combined volume (there are 3 different versions of this same hefty text) for mere dollars. For the time period your son is interested in, there is definitely less focus on what was happening in America and more focus on the events taking place in Europe. So this text could provide a jumping off point for him.
The Age of Religious Wars, by Dunn, is from the Norton History of Modern Europe series and I've seen it on a few reading lists, so that might be another option to consider. If you look on Amazon, you will find other titles in the series.
Then, there is classic literature to look into as well, such as Tale of Two Cities, by Dickens (French Revolution). Perhaps looking at some
Great Books reading lists as suggested in The Well-Trained Mind will be helpful. And, of course, don't forget Reading Your Way Through History for Catholic suggestions.
BTW, I'm trying to work out a dual-track course for this time period for my daughter who will be turning 15, thus the keen interest in this topic!

Valerie, thanks for the recommendations and the book list references (I don't know why I did not think of these myself). Our literature and history overlapped this year and I really liked the way that it worked out.
My ds will be enrolled in Great Books year four next year, so some of his reading will overlap with his history again. I hope that your daughter likes it as much as my son does.
