Living, not textbooky . They are available free online from the Baldwin Project so you can take a look and decide whether you want to buy them. Memoria Press have recently published new editions, which I'm told (I haven't seen them) are significantly better than the Greenleaf version, with high quality artwork.

I have a couple of the Greenleaf books, but haven't seen the Memoria Press ones. I know someone who sells them here and he is switching from Greenleaf to Memoria Press. I'll ask if he knows how much difference there is in the text.

The Memoria Press versions are very nice. Great illustrations. We really enjoyed both Rome and Greece.

My ds, 11, who LOVES history has been reading Famous Men of Greece. His big gripe is that it uses the Roman names for the Greek Gods, and as he is also reading lots of other Greek God stuff, it becomes confusing. It gives a brief overview, but does not really go in depth. I would look at it as a jumping off point, but a fantastic overview to get anyone started.
