Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just wondering if any of you have any experience with a series of books entitled The Royal Diaries - I would love to know your thoughts.

Thank you!

Bump...

I'm interested in these, too. I have read a different book that's along the same vein. Its called Mary, Bloody Mary, by Carolyn Meyer and part of the Young Royals series.

I'd use this one as a read aloud, rather than a reader, unless it was for a child at least 13. I think it shows Mary to be devout and shows her mother, Catherine of Aragon the same way. Anne comes off looking *horrible*, as well as Henry the VIIIth. Its pretty clear the creation of the Church of England was not for Holy reasons. The main reason I would use it as read aloud is because there are many many many references to "B*st*rds" because of the situation of Mary being proclaimed illegitimate by Henry. There are also a few references to her fears of being r*p*d in order to discredit her a possible future heiress to the throne. The book ends well before her ascendancy to the throne. Its about her childhood and early adulthood as a virtual prisoner of the King, her father.

I was prereading it for ds (its used in a Sonlight Core we purchased) and even though its intended for 12 and up (according to the back cover), it held my attention.

hope this helps!

I have a couple of the Royal Diaries books but have only skimmed through one (on Marie Antoinette). I remember thinking it would be OK as a read aloud for my 10yo - can't remember offhand if there was anything I felt I would need to edit. I know a couple of friends whose dds have read some of these books. Both girls are discerning readers and neither were impressed with them - they had problems with both style and content.

I read the one about Elizabeth, the empress of Austria, and thoroughly enjoyed it. As did my dd!
