Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have been at this for our second year and are just heading onto the 4th declension. The kids usually ace the translations and I think we are working well with the mastery part of it. But sometimes I think my, my, aren't we taking it slow. We seem to be on the 5 year plan (at least) for Book 1.

We work for about 30 minutes for around 3 days a week average. I am Ok with this, just wondering if anyone else took it slowly....

ps This is with a 11 yo and 13yo

Kristie -
I think the right pace is the one that works. If your dc are learning and not screaming from frustration or hating Latin, then you've found the right balance. Are you using the MODG syllabus, or breaking it up yourself? The MODG syllabus is for high school students; I wouldn't use that as my goal with 11 or 13 year-olds.

From your description, it sounds like things are going just fine.

Peace,
Nancy

Yes Nancy, that is what my gut was telling me. My kids actually really enjoy latin.

We were sort of using the Memoria Press guide but that is way to driven for me- so now we just slowly work through the exercises, reviewing as necessary and doing lots of recitations of forms and such..

Thanks,
Kristie

"Basic Language Principles with Latin Background" is the best thing ever for kids just getting down to the nitty gritty. You can get it from Emmanuel books (do yourself a favor and get the answer key). It is recommended by MODG for 8th grade but I am using it with my ninth grader and it is a WONDERFUL and gentle intro to Latin course. We are actually enjoying it and find no problems keeping up with the lessons. It makes teaching Latin a snap! We plan to hit Henle next year.
