We just finished Pedro's Journal -- it's only 80 some pages -- and it was a great intro to Columbus' voyages, sailing in general and exploration.

My one quibble is that the second half of the book has the narrator (Pedro, ship's boy and Columbus' scribe) get a bit judgemental and negative about Columbus and what they were doing ... kidnapping natives and only worried about the gold, etc. Not that how Columbus approached this was good -- it wasn't. But a fictionalized account should have been more contemporaneous -- the boy Pedro wouldn't have questioned Columbus' actins to the natives would he? Wouldn't he have thought that the natives were lesser than the Europeans?

How should an author handle a book like this -- be accurate to prevailing mores or speak from a 21st Century perspective?

Has anyone else read this? Any comments?
