I've had 'grand plans' to use French with my children from birth—but haven't quite managed on the follow through:-(

In starting to think about next year, I've decided that a logical way for us to get started is to get some CDs of songs (I've found a number of recommendations in this thread, so I'm going to start by looking at those... I'm thinking of the CD type resources further down the page, rather than the 'courses'), but the other idea I had was to get a selection of picture books—some that are translations of books we have in English (eg La chenille qui fait des trous, Devine Combien Je t'aime, Max et le maximontres) and some that are french originals (the Madeleine books?).

What I'm wondering is if anyone has any recommendations for titles. I'm planning on aiming at my daughter (she'll be just over two by the time I get my act together... bearing in mind we'll have a newborn in the next couple of months:-) ), and figure that my son (4.5) will tag along for the ride... Have you read any books with your kids that they've particularly enjoyed? Or that you thought were particularly worthwhile in terms of vocab? I'm hoping that we can use this as a springboard to using French more naturally.

Or are there any further thoughts on the song side of things (that thread was 12 months ago... if you've started using some of the recommendations, how have you found them?)

Hello,

I am French, and trying the same thing and it is truly not easy when in a complete English environment.
What I have been doing for the last few weeks ( 4 DC between 5 and 4 months) is read Babar, (Mom mailed me mine form when I was little, too cute ) And I don't know if you can get them here I would look for the stories les Albums du Pere Castor (I just passed an order to my parents who are coming back from France at the end of September) Other than that Usborne had a great book with my first thousand words in French a couple years back. Good for vocabulary. As the girls grow older I plan on getting into the Martine series and Caroline.
I have found very little here, so I am glad to be able to get it from over seas. That's all I ask for for BDays and Christmas.
You might wnat to get them a subscription to Belles Histoires ou Pommes D'api www.groupebayard.com/fr A little pricey but way worth it!

Thanks a heap:-) I'd forgotten Babar:-) I'll keep looking for les Albums du Père Castor... Caroline is Pierre Probst? Martine is Gilbert Delahaye and Marcel Marlier? I'll keep my eye open for those, too... they sound ideal:-)

I'm pretty much going to be ordering online whatever I do, so anything to help me choose _good_ books is appreciated! (My french is reasonable, but fairly functional... even if I were able to browse, I wouldn't guarantee that I'd recognise 'twaddle' unless it's pretty overt!). There is a French bookshop in town, but it has fairly limited opening hours, and it's not proving easy to get to:-(

Are there any other authors you can recommend? (the bayard site has links to books from each of the magazine pages... so I'm following those up:-) )

I've seen the Usborne book, and did think that was quite likely to go on the list.
