Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm reading the Mater Amabilis web site for the first time. I've never heard of this book before.

If you are using it, is it comparable to Pioneers and Patriots, perhaps? I did see the link to read it online, but I was hoping someone might be willing to give a basic review of it for me?

This is much more CM than PP -- Each chapter is a story about the topic -- for instance it starts with Leif Erickson and the voyages of the Vikings. HEMarshall tends to be pro-Protestant so the view of France Hugenots settling in Florida but than getting "massacred" by the Spanish -- who according to everything else had the "right" to Florida -- can get a bit much at times. Also This Country of Ours is great up until the Revolution, than her text goes to reviewing American history by the President in charge -- and only till Wilson and WWI.

You can view it online at This Country of Ours where you can buy a copy or print it yourself. Michele also has a version for sale (which I've heard is better as it's spiral bound, I think....) Michele's site -- she's only got 3 left if you want to get it from her.

Hope this helps.

Another very CM-y History book that I would recommend is "America is Born" by Gerald W. Johnson. Although it has some of the warts that Mary described in the Marshall book, it's still very readable, and I think a bit more even-handed (tho only a bit). I actually like it quite a lot. It only goes up to the end of the Revolution. The next book is ""America Grows Up" and "America Moves Forward". I got them all as throw-aways from the local parochial school. I'd say the age range is 10 to 14, tho I have my 15 year old reading it for content.

Another one that's very CM-ish is "Land of the Free" by Enid LaMonte Meadowcroft, which goes up thru the Revolution. I'd say it's for ages 8 to 10. Very readable.
