Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK... I have two I will be doing some geography with. DD is pretty easy, she's just going to be doing Montessori style geography!

But then there is DS. I have looked at The Geography Matters Trail Guides and some of the Evan Moor Stuff, but neither are quite what I want. Evan-Moor is a little too workbookish, and Trail Guides require a bunch of books. Ann Voskamp's book is nice BUT she only has the Holy Land right now in addition to her Physical Geography book. (She has samples at the link BTW).
Friends have recommended Galloping the Globe, but it seems to be very much orientated towards the Protestant Evangelism, and annoyed me a little.

I thought about a more literature based travel study, but I have no idea where to start... I'd like a book like the Ann Voskamp one, which she based on the Hillyer book 'A Child's Geography'.

Any ideas?

Can we brainstorm some?

Rachel,
I was going to mention Hillyer's A Child's Geography of the World. I bought it when my oldest was 1st/2nd grade and we just read the a chapter a week, charted on a wall map and visited the sites online as available. I also had purchased National Geographic pictorial flash cards and we would match the cards to various sites we would come across as we read. It was fun!   We tried to tie in living books as well but I was less sucessful here... I have never heard of Voskamp's book...I might have to look into that as I am gearing up for Geography this year with my 6 and 8 year old, though I will not be able to put away Mr. Hillyer--we love him so!

I thought about using Galloping the Globe last year, but after reading these reviews on Amazon, I changed my mind.

I always combine Geography with History - so when we studied American History and were reading about Columbus, maps were made of Columbus' voyage using our puzzle maps - that sort of thing.

I mourned when we finished the Holling C Holling Literature Guides. Seriously. I can't wait until my ds can do them next.

Have you looked into those?

We have read most of the Holling books... which is why I am being so picky! The kids and I loved these. Maybe I will go look for the Hillyer and use it as a spine...

I am resurrecting this thread because I have questions about Child's Geography.

I saw on a the website a reference to the flood (Noah's flood) being what caused the continents to shift...

This concerned me. Other than that this looks ideal, but not enough! Not enough about the cultures and particular areas.

I loved the idea of Hillyer but realised it had not been redone as the History has. Im concerned about stereotypes and also the archaic nature of the geography.

Its available used for around 45 or so. Not super great price wise.

I need something to go along with Core 5. I have already also planned to buy Trail Guides. I wondered if I need the Art book and the time line book as well as the atlas and etc? What did you use with TG if you have used it?

We used the Mater Amabilis' recommendation Richard Halliburton's Complete book of Marvels which we were able to pick up used. We would read about one of the places he visited...mark it on a map and research it online...(you get colored pics that way and some interesting perspective). The kids loved doing this. We have used this slowly with everyone over the last 2 years and are almost done.

Sometimes we would sketch the place or color a pic of something and display it in our notebooks or on one special shelf we had for such projects. We even used one of the papercraft sites that has 3 D models you can make...(there are 2 of them, I can send a link if you want) which entertained my 12 yo ds and I. I am STILL working on the model of Mt.St. Michael I started several months ago...this one is a bit involved lol

We are planning on using MA's recommendation for the Synge book for this upcoming year...

HTH!
God love you!
