Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those of you who use Story of the World how long do you generally spend on a chapter? I've been using it for 4 years now with 3 kids and my oldest is now in the 3rd book.    We usually have spent a week on a chapter doing the readings, coloring, maps, and some activities. Since implementing ideas from this board though I'm seeing the value of using living books and am thinking I should use the bib. supplied for each chapter more and get deeper understanding...or would this just be too much?

What have you been doing?

Sometimes we spend a week, sometimes just a day for short chapters. I don't get the extra books because we live in a small town and our library is rather small and interlibrary loan is $2 a book so I just don't have the resources to do a lot of the extras.

However, I think that if you do have the time to spend a week or two on each chapter reading the books and doing the projects your children will have much better retention.

I have gone from listening to a chapter on the CD in the car, doing one craft/project, reading a few of the book selections, doing the mapwork, and asking some of the comprehension questions at the lunch table and it taking 1-2 weeks, to our present plan, just listening to the CD.
It seems to work well either way for my kids. They love listening to the CD's and remember most of what they have heard. We do listen to each chapter more than once

My oldest is 8, so up to this point we've typically just spent a week on each chapter. We do the readings, narration, map work, and an occassional activity.

Next year we'll be doing Memoria Press's Classical Studies with a little of SOTW Modern History on the side. I do want to add in more living books to our history studies.
