Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone want to throw out book suggestions for Andrew Jackson, the War of 1812, the Alamo, and the Trail of Tears?

We do history unit study style, primarily geared to an almost 10 year old, but appealing to family-style learning.

Thank you for this link Theresa.

I clicked on it just as my son was coming in. He is a history- and lego-buff and although he is soon to be 18 he giggled through it!

WEll, that's a hysterically funny start...and we're from New Orleans originally and are headed there next weekend for a birthday party. I wonder if the battlefield has re-opened after Katrina...could make a fun introduction. If not, we can always head to the French Quarter to view the sculpture in Jackson Square. I'm sure I can get some history in some way.....now to find some books...

Late to the discussion and I figure you already looked in the archives but I thought it would be good to have some of these resources all together for those interested.

A few years ago I posted an American Flag Unit thread which containted these resources related to the War of 1812.
Quote:
The Flag Maker is the story of Caroline Pickersgill and her mother, Mary, a Baltimore flagmaker commissioned to sew the huge Fort McHenry flag that inspired the "Star-Spangled Banner." Picture book story focusing on young Caroline's part in this piece of history. Tells much about Baltimore during this period of the War of 1812. Detailed illustrations show life in an early 19th century US city.

Website rabbit trails on Mary Pickersgill:
The Flag House & Star-Spangled Banner Museum
   Mary Young Pickersgill

By the Dawn's Early Light - story book depiction of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. Beautiful illustrations with an "old" feel.
Other Star Spangled Banner books:
Peter Spier's Star Spangled Banner
Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner

Website rabbit trails on Star Spangled Banner & Francis Scott Key:
   Fort McHenry website 1 & website 2
Smithsonian Institute's Star Spangled Banner site - incredible site, lots of interactive info, also several audio versions of the song.
   Francis Scott Key

In this thread - War of 1812 there are lots of ideas/resources and Irene shares a great book list.

Here are the sections that pertain to these topics from Elizabeth's Picturebooks of American History list (from the files of the CCM yahoo group):

War of 1812 (and Andrew Jackson)
Who Let Muddy Boots Into the White House? A Story of Andrew Jackson - Quakenbush, Robert M.
Andrew Jackson, Frontier Patriot - Sabin, Louis
Star Spangled Banner - Kroll, Steven
Star Spangled Banner - Spier, Peter
Laura Secord’s Brave Walk - Crook, Connie Brummel
Learn Song: Ballad of the Battle of New Orleans

Westward Expansion
Battle of the Alamo - Murphy, Keith
Voices of the Alamo - Garland, Sherry

Oh Mary, you made my day and then the boards closed and I didn't get to say thanks. I had played in the archives, but just couldn't put my plans together on this one. But you've rescued me! Our library list is printed, our book basket is waiting, and our field trip to the battlefield and the Shrine to Our Lady of Prompt Succor (Thanks for the reminder Jenn) is planned.
You ladies are the best!

LOVE this song. Chelsea's godfather sings and plays it on his guitar and the kids love it.

Colleen,
Alamo---you have this book Susannah of the Alamo by John Jakes, I'm sure.

Got it Cay, thanks. And we're hoping to stop to visit an Aunt and Uncle in San Antonio when we go to Mexico in July and get it an Alamo field trip. Don't you love when life just works out that way?

Glad to help, Colleen.

A couple new picture books that I didn't get to add before the Sunday closure.

Dolley Madison Saves George Washington - War of 1812

Priscilla and the Hollyhocks-Trail of Tears

I haven't seen this one but heard it is pretty good:
Only the Names Remain - Trail of Tears

And then these are some (chapter book) titles suggested in A Landscape with Dragons (Michael O'Brien)
Andy Jackson's Water Well
The Last Battle - War of 1812
The Cape May Packet (Stephen Meader) - War of 1812
Treason at York (John Hays) - War of 1812

MaryM, I have no idea how you came upon this book list superpower you have (were you in the library during an electrical storm at some point? ) but I imagine me scratching my head looking at my empty book basket and you whizzing in with a cape and a stack of books, filling my baskets then flying off. Close your eyes and imagine the joy and gratitude on my face after that .
