Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest dd has expressed an interest in learning Korean. She takes taekwondo, so I know where it is coming from

Has anyone else tried to tackle this language? I'm not sure what to look for?

Any ideas? Thanks!

Kacky,

Well, I speak Korean but don't know where to direct you. You can see if there's a local Korean community and then see if they have classes. Usually, if there's a big enough community, there are classes so that young ones will learn how to write and increase their fluency.

Also, Rosetta Stone has a Korean language program.

I think it's great that she wants to learn. If she were closer, I'd teach her myself.

Hi! I'm new around here.
We are in the same boat. My oldest takes Taekwondo and wants to learn Korean also. We have been watching a very outdated set of videos on Youtube called Let's Speak Korean. He has to learn certain Korean phrases and counting in his class. The going has been slow and I know we'd never reach fluency this way, but it is a start. The owner of our dojang's wife has recently offered to tutor my son. Are the instructor's in your dd's school fluent? Maybe one of them could work with her. Also, many Korean churches will offer language and culture classes. I would try calling around since I don't see the classes advertised. You should be able to find Korean churches through Google.
Best of luck!

Well, I don't know of any formal sources, but I learned a lot watching Korean TV dramas--the older ones are better, extremely chaste! The newer ones, less so.

A favorite historical one is "Dae Jang Geum" which has a few scenes you'd have to blip over--probably better for a mature teen.

Most have English subtitles.

We took taekwondo also and used quite a lot of Korean in class. Some of my husband's co-workers are Korean-American and they think it's funny when he answers the phone (knowing who it is) "an yong ee gay say oh" or just "geh say yoh" in a dead perfect accent. OK, I can't spell it, but that's what it sounds like.

goodbye is "an yong EE-HAH say oh"

honey/darling is "yoh BOH" (heard frequently on TV dramas as "yohbooooohhh!," ha ha)

I still think: hana, dul, set, net! every time I do any kind of exercise.

LOL - me too! Dah-sot, yo-sot, Ill-gop, Yo-dul....

We are going to the ISKA World Competition in Orlando this weekend. To see our school compete.

You're a better mom than I am, I told my kids they have to learn a useful second language - Latin and/or Spanish. Take your pick.....
This is coming from a mom who speaks French - not a lot of call for that in Texas!
