Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is anybody teaching their children a foreign language? I know the best way for a child to learn a second language would be to immerse them in it. I don't speak Spanish but have a strong background in it from high school ... from years gone by!

I am introducing Spanish vocabulary words to my children, ages 5 and 7, but I am wondering if there's a "program" out there that one would recommend OR if anybody has any suggestions on how to go about helping them learn how to speak it.

My high schoolers are using Rosetta Stone. Has anybody tried using that with younger children? (I *could* give that a whirl, but they don't read fluently yet.)

We practice using our vocabulary during the day ... they ask me if they can have a "manzana" (apple) or some "leche" (milk) when they're hungry/thirsty. So, in that aspect, they are using it. But I want them to progress more and be ready for the formal subject when in high school.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you.

Blessings,

My 3 oldest love to do Rosetta Stone. I don't think any of us every pay attention to the written words (have I even seen them?) but focus on the pictures and sounds instead. However, I'm not trying to make it a formal language study; it's something they do for fun. They each have picked a different language to learn so we have kids learning Spanish, Latin, Modern Greek, and briefly Japanese too. The one who is learning Spanish will ask for help from me sometimes when she's not on the computer, and my Spanish is just good enough to correct pronunciation or adjective/noun agreement. I like that they are getting an "ear" for it.

the Rosetta stone.. the parts that are picture and spoken words.. they can get.. but I have found they don't stick with it real well.. but rather play at it now and again.. I figure it's not going anywhere and it'll be here when they're a bit older (though my oldest is about ready to work at it)

I'm moving this over to Across Time and Place were we have included past discussions of foreign language. The archives there would yield some discussion of Spanish language programs for younger students.

EDITED: Oops make that the Cultivating Beauty and Culture forum.
