Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am afraid that history is not my strong suit but using resources that are in sync with the Church are important to me. Does anyone know if this authors texts are acceptable or if it is a red flag?
Thanks,
Darlene

Hi Darlene -

I first came across the recommendation for M.B Synge at Mater Amablisand I am very confident in the founders of this program and their choices.

We have recently started "On the Shores of the Great Sea" as a family (ages 13, 11, 8, and 5) and I really like it so far! Intellectually, I've always known that the Bible does have a historical context but this book is really helping us to see the Biblical stories as real living history - and how it fits into ancient history. It's been a real bridge between the subjects of history and religion.

We've already found a rabbit trail - we are currently looking a little more deeply into Ancient Phoenicia. I have
Uncle Josh's Outline Maps- which I am so happy to finally be using! And I brought home a bunch of reference books my mom had on hand.

I think that is how we will continue to use this book - I read it aloud to the family and the older ones will make a lap book for different areas we want to go into more deeply.

It is so nice to get excited about a subject - I don't know if it will work for you as it does for us - it is written more as a narrative and I would recommend having some kind of historical atlas so you can see the places they are talking about - no maps in the book.

You can also read this book online here
which might help you get a sense whether it would work for you - actually many of Synge's books can be found at this site - I did purchases mine from Yesterday's Classics.

Probably more than you wanted to know .
