Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What a wonderful unit study!

I will definitely be using these ideas when we get to Africa (later on this year). Many thanks for this gold mine of information.

I stumbled across a large African sound collection last night. I listened to a long selection; these aren't little clips. Looks like fun!

A great video -- distributed by Disney, go figure -- is called Endurance; it's about the Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrsellasie who won gold at the 96 olympics. It's got great footage of Ethiopia - contrasting the big city (where he trains) to his home life in the country. The family are Ethiopian Rite Catholics, so there are ceremonies included int ehvideo of baptism and a funeral as well as showing Haile saying prayers before running his first marathon....

There is also a beautiful soundtrack available, Endurance that has absolutely lovely African music.....

Check your library for the movie -- that's where we first heard about it...

Blessings

For dinner tonight, it's Groundnut Stew, just like in the Village of Round and Square Houses

1-1/2 lb. boneless beef chuck pot roast, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 Tbsp. peanut oil or cooking oil
1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
2 cups water
2 large tomatoes, peeled and chopped (1-1/2 cups)
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh, mild green chili peppers (such as Anaheim)
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper
3/4 cup peanut butter
3 cups hot cooked rice
6 hard-cooked eggs, sliced (optional)

1. Trim fat from meat. In a 4-quart Dutch oven brown half the beef in the hot oil. Remove from pan. Brown remaining beef with the onion, adding more oil if necessary. Drain off fat. Return all beef to pan.

2. Stir in water, tomatoes, chili peppers, salt, and crushed red pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, about 1-1/2 hours or until meat is tender.

3. Remove about 1 cup of the broth from the meat mixture; stir into peanut butter. Return peanut butter mixture to Dutch oven. Heat through. Serve over hot cooked rice. Garnish with egg slices, if desired. Makes 6 servings.

Nutrition facts per serving: 525 cal., 27 g total fat (7 g sat. fat), 82 mg chol., 395 mg sodium, 35 g carbo., 3 g fiber, 38 g pro. Daily values: 5% vit. A, 69% vit. C, 3% calcium, 33% iron.

Seemed a little thin to me so I added finely chopped carrots.

Ahh, someone beat me to the punch. I was just coming here to tell you guys about it . It's really fun site and can become a little bit addicting once you see one of the bigger game animals there.

That is SO cool! I can't wait to share this with our student who lives with us. She's African, and will go BANANAS over it. The sound feed is totally mind-boggling, too. Wow.

My son wrote to Jan Brett a few years ago and she wrote him back with a nice letter. She also sends out periodic newsletters. In her newsletter she talks about how she took a trip to Africa not to long ago. She has a new book out based on her trip thereHoney,...Honey... Lion!. It looks really interesting and beautiful.

We happened upon the book, Uncommon Traveler; Mary Kingsley in Africa, by Don Brown, this week at the library.

It's the story of Mary Kingsley (big surprise, eh?), a self-educated young woman from England who travels to West Africa after the deaths of her parents in the 1800's.

I didn't see it listed above and thought I'd share...

God Bless,

The Jan Brett book and the NG Africa Cam/Pete's Pond have really sparked the Africa interest here over the last month as well. A movie we really enjoyed to go along with the study was Africa's Elephant Kingdom (it was an IMAX movie filmed with Discovery Channel) and the book that was made from it - Growing Up in Africa's Elephant Kingdom: The Story of Little Bull . The photography in both is awesome.

I found additional info on a couple Marian devotions specific to Africa in the Ann Ball book, The Other Faces of Mary. It includes info on Our Lady of Africa and Our Lady, Queen and Protectress of Nigeria. Interesting reading.
