I want to use one or both of these for Thanksgiving. I like the Amanda Bennets Thanksgiving study b/c it says i dont need any additional books and everything is included. But my kids are on the young side, almost 5yo and 6yo, so do you think that it would go over their heads? I like it also b/c i can use it year after year, delving deeper as they grow older.
How about the Hands of A Child Thanksgiving themed lapbooks. I've never done a lapbook with them before due to my lack of creativity. Do you think that's a good start for someone who hasnt done any lapbooks? TIA!!

Graciefaith,
We have had so much fun just readingCranberry Thanksgiving and then making the "secret" recipe at the end and bringing to folks on T-day! This book really captured my kids when they were little (3 & 4 when we first found this book) and we LOVE making the bread. The story is so good!
Add to this a bit about turkeys, mince pie and you should be all set! I wouldn't spend a ton on unit studies with your kids being so young -- read this book (and maybeThanksgiving Wish) which are wonderful examples of how Thanksgiving can mean so much in a family! Than relate your own (and your dh's) memories of thanksgiving celebrations -- t-day is always such a FAMILY feast -- don't get sucked into unit studies that take that out of the day .... have fun with the kids.

Thank you Mary! We rowed Cranberry Thanksgiving last year but im sure we can do it again this year and make it even more meaningful!! My dd has outgrown her food allergies so im sure i can pull off many different recipes this year that i wasnt able to last year.
I'm having the baby soon and i guess i was feeling a little guilty knowing i'd take a few weeks off of school. I want to keep up with some things and focus on the holidays. My family is also visiting mid November for 2wks so we'll definitely be taking those weeks off.

I have the HOAC Tgiving lapbook. Its rated for 2nd-6th grade. There is no way my 2nd grader would get everything out of it that I would like, so I am waiting till next year. My first recommendation would have been Cranberry Thanksgiving, too. How about finding some other Tgiving picture books at the library, getting some stuff at Enchanted Learning and then reading Cranberry as a go along one of those days? Your kids are so little! I don't know that I'd even attempt a lapbook with kids that little...

I added some resources (lapbooky type things) for Cranberry Thanksgiving at Homeschool Share.
Cranberry Thanksgiving Resources
We are going to do a little unit on Goody O'Grumpity which I also made a lapbook for. Goody O'Grumpity Unit Study
It doesn't FOCUS on Thanksgiving, but I think once you read the poem, you'll see the connections. It's a fun, light book that my ds (6) will love.
Also, HOAC is offering the Turkey Time (PK-1st) lapbook for free.

Thanks Books! I always see these beautifully done lapbooks and i feel guilty that im not as hands one or as creative to do one with my own kids.
I've looked into the FIAR archives for Cranberry Thanksgiving and i think we can just do that. It'll be more fun too!
The HOAC lapbook i was looking at is called Turkey Time which is for Prek-1st.

Thanks Ami! I didnt even think to look at your website for Cranberry Thanksgiving! That's great and it'll give me so much to do. I can probably throw in lots of supplemental books and row it for more than a week.
I think we can do that Goody O'Grumpity Unit Study too. You have lots of great stuff.
The server seems to be busy when i click on your HOAC link but that's exactly the lapbook i was going to get. Thank you so much again!! Forget it, i got through and downloaded it. Thanks so much again!!

I didn't realize they had a pk one...but its downloading now. Thanks, Ami, for the head's up!
I will say that if you are wanting to get into lapbooking but are new to it (I am...we've only done one and it was only about 3 weeks ago), I do like HOAC. Everything is laid out and well explained. I am craft challenged and I managed to figure it out with only one hysterical phone call to a girlfriend about how to assemble the files. I bought several from HOAC a few weeks ago and I really like what I see. If you are into FIAR (which we are) Blueberries for Sal is another great one for the age group you are working with, but much more extensive than the Turkey Time one. It definitely moves this B4 book into the FIAR age group well.

Thanks Ami - great resources.
I was just planning Thanksgiving too. I am wondering though about my 8 and 11 year olds - I was considering the Amanda Bennett unit study. Can I stretch Cranberry Thanksgiving for them too?

I'm planning to put together a Thankgsiving study for the month of November.
I don't have Cranberry Thanksgiving, but I'm going to use:
If You Sailed On the Mayflower in 1620
If You Were at the First Thanksgiving
Samuel Eaton's Day
Sarah Mortons Day
Tapenum's Day
as well as a few related picture books I have on hand. I also just downloaded the freebie that Ami mentioned. This will be our first year learning the history behind the holiday, so I'm excited about that.

Thank you ladies for all the inspiration. I'm already excited. I'm going to start putting it all together now and printing out what i can so i dont have that much prep work when the baby's here. Thanks again!!
Oh, unfortunately my library doesnt carry Goody O'Grumpity. I will be getting my hands on as many Thanksgiving themed picture books as i can though. This year is also the first year they will learn a little bit of the history behind the holiday. I just want to make it really fun with hands on projects.
