Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Somehow I am teaching a unit study on skyscrapers. I have a good book that's packed with activities, but I need some hands-on things for 2 large groups of 20+ students to do. (I can't have them each create a model city, for ex., and I don't want to do every single activity in small groups.)

All advice appreciated!

Magnetix makes blocks that build city type buildings. We used them to re-create skylines of some mjor cities. They may be a fun activity for everyone. Also, a good game of Jenga may lead to a great discussion about construction and keeping height balanced...sorry, I had hoped to link those two items, but dh needs the computer, might be able to try again later.

This one takes some advance notice, but here is an activity I created when I taught middle school. The whole school got involved and loved it.
I held a canned food drive contest with a twist. Each class collected as much canned food as they could over a couple of weeks. And then at a given time, each class had to build the tallest tower they could out of the cans. When the time was up, the towers were measured, and the tallest tower won. As a prize, the winning team got to choose the charity to which all of the cans for the whole school were donated!
It was so much fun to see the kids so enthusiastic about winning so that their favorite charity would get all of the food!
Plus, the kids learned a lot about how to build tall, as no tape or fasteners of any kind were allowed.
Perhaps some modification of this would be fun.
You could also have them get in teams to compete building human towers. Tallest tower wins. Just make sure you do this in a padded area and use adult spotters.I've had kids get really enthusiastic about this activity.
Then there is always building with straws and paper clips, with prizes for tallest and most unique design.
