I wanted to start a wall timeline with my kids this year and I have the space to do it (although it is a very tall wall an right smack in the middle of our house), but I am wondering if a notebook that they can touch and flip through would be better?
Any thoughts?

What about combining them? We do both a wall timeline and also have Books of Centuries, however, our Books of Centuries have suffered some neglect of late. Our timeline, though, continues to thrive, so I guess, for us, the great, big visual is our favorite.
Still, it's nice to have both, and by doing both, you're appealing to more than one learning style. Some of your kids may be more visual, some may be more hands-on, and might enjoy the book more.

Another thought: no time right now to paste all the past threads, but do a search on this forum for "Book of Centuries" and you'll get older threads on the comparisons, samples of each, etc.
Good luck deciding!

This is what I love about this forum.
You mean... I can do both? Why did I not think of that?
Thanks Karen!

We are going back to ancient history this year and I really want to do a timeline too (the one I attempted last year never took ).
I like the dual effort - maybe I'll have the boys keep the ones in their notebooks and I'll be in charge of the one on the wall.
Now, just what wall shall it be? Most of them are taken!

I'm definitely toying with the wall timeline, and the book one too...see which one takes. But I have seen, all for a cost, some timeline figures to add for that nice visual look. Anyone have any good links to some freebie figures...always going cheap over here!

I did a wall timeline on fan fold paper so that it can be unfurled sections at a time or whole periods at a time. Use poster board and tape the middle at the back and fold it like an accordian. It is great for limited wall space - but even with limited wallspace, there is nothing like being able to really See it all spread out before you.

I don't have either started yet, but I have something in mind for when we do. I bought a ledger book at the thrift store in excellent condition, and I plan on using that for our Book of Centuries. I'm going to use legal size paper for the timeline itself, maybe laminated, and then insert some pages of letter size for pictures or any extras we want to add for that time period.
I'm still considering putting one down the hallway, as I just think that really looks like fun!

We really enjoyed our wall time-line. It lead to some great dinner conversations(from adult guests, too!) as it was located in the dining room. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth when we had to remove it two years later, but I got over it

We did notebook timelines last year. I discovered that we rarely looked at them except when we were adding to it. So this year I am doing a wall one. I bought a purple border (one that is sold to go around a bullitin board). I am going to put that up in my dd's room to act as our wall time line. This way we will hopefully look at it more often!

We have both too. I just got the wall one from Rainbow Resource, here
Its a poster, but you can cut it apart to make it linear. The poster format fits my wall better at least for now.
I like that they can each have an individual personalized book, but that we can all participate in the wall one, which is also harder to forget about and neglect!

Oh, I meant to say that with the wall one that we did fan folded - it gave us flexibility to have it up or not. When not up, it tucked nicely in the pocket of their binder timeline so they could still unfurl it on the floor. We found that we looked at it more unfurled on the floor as it got lost in clutter on the walls (at the time we were very crowded). It also meant that each child could do their own wall timeline and we could rotate whose was on display.
Fan folded, it is also easy to add to as you go further forward or backward. We added BC much later.

I just remembered -- Here's an older thread that has pictures of both timelines and books:
