Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a spine for American History, and I keep coming back to this series. I love the idea of it, but I'm not sure it would be appropriate. My dd will be 8 in 2 weeks, and if I use these, I plan on spreading them over several years. (I'm thinking books 1-3 for 3rd grade, then 4-5 for 4th, then 6-7 for 5th grade, and 8-10 for 6th, all the while supplementing with lots of living books of course)

If anyone has used these books, can you tell me about them? Thanks!

I had the first book of the series (The First Americans) and while the writing is very engaging and the pictures interesting, there was some blatant misrepresentation of the Catholic Church during parts of the book. I don't remember if there was a politically correct slant to the book or not, nor can I weigh in on the other volumes.

As with any book that isn't Catholic, you need to judge for yourself what you can edit out or correct. If you're using it as a read aloud, that's easier to do than if you're handing the book over for your child to read.

If your local library system has copies available, I would suggest looking over a few before deciding to buy. You can also get an idea by using Amazon's "Search Inside" feature for most volumes.

HTH,
Valerie

I agree with Valerie. We checked one of the books out from the library. I had been looking at the series for one of my daughters to read independently. The misrepresentation of the Catholic Church and Mary, Queen of Scots made my husband and me decide against this series.

Yes, they do have a politically correct slant.
