Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering what you would suggest is a good spine for 1st grade religious history?
For our religion, I am planning on studying Bible, memorising things such as the 10 commandments ... and studying some saints.
My only problem is what to use to do our studies... so many things seem geared towards a higher grade level than first.

Hi Rachel, what we have done for 1st grade religious and catechism is mainly structured around the CHC 1st grade lesson plans, but you don't necessariy need them to carry out a nice lesson plan. The basis is:

A BIBLE PICTURE TIMELINE (we made ours with either color copies of a children's bible, workbook artwork or pictures from religious magazines)

CATECHISM using the New St. Joseph's Baltimore Catechism No. 0 (basically read with child and review ?'s at the end of each section - I use a very genlte approach here, it's just to familiarize them to what they will continue learning throughout their grade school catechism) I have also used Religion 1 For Young Catholics by Seton and it's good too with beautiful art appreciation througout

CHARACTER BUILDING CARDS from the CHC LP's

SAINTS STUDIES We've used Once Upon a Time Saints and More Once Upon a Time Saints, plus the Tomie de Paola saint stories for St. Patrick, St. Francis of Assisi, also the Seton faith and Freedom readers have lots of saints stories weaved throughout.

Hth with your decisions, I've also used the Faith and Life series too but didn't care for them as much as the other sources I've listed. If you have any more questions feel free to PM or email me off list.

I'd like to know also. I am trying to come up with some different motivational type activities and reinforcements for the virtues we're working on this summer. I may start a new thread about that soon.

Rachel and Gwen, you might want to check out the CHC website (see below) but just glancing at their catalog they also have a description in there that says:

"The use of character building cards is a positive way to reinforce good behavior and the practice of virtue and courtesy. This course includes 28 illustrated cards covering five topics - Respect, Charity, Attitude, Virtue, Church Manners - and two illustrated chore charts ("How I Love My Family")."

The chore charts aside, the cards can be copied onto cardstock or in my son's case we put them into categories and worked on them throughout the year and as each was mastered put it into a notebook that he is compiling for his religion/catechism/saints, etc.

On the top of some 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock for each category I wrote "Create a clean heart in me O Lord." and then under it + God is building Benjamin's Character with RESPECT +

Then he would color and paste each card onto this page. I repeated the *clean heart* theme throughout but inserted Through Virtues, or With Church Manners, you get the idea I hope. My son really liked this format and it was easy for him to see how well he was doing throughout the year as they were all on the page together rather than in a file box or something.

HTH, let me know if this isn't clear or if you have anymore questions.
